Driver evades law enforcement after lengthy chase

FOND DU LAC COUNTY, Wis. — A driver gets away from law enforcement after leading a chase in Fond du Lac and Dodge counties. A deputy tried pulling the driver over for speeding on State Highway 26 early Wednesday morning. The driver sped off and led a chase that spanned nearly 15 miles.

Fond du lac County officials are considering renaming a county highway after the late county executive Allen Buechel. The County Highway Committee last week discussed renaming County Highway QQ Highway AB. Highway Commissioner Tom Janke says it’s not uncomon for county highways to be named after predominant county leaders. “Allen Buechel is dearly missed and was a figure in the community for 40 plus years in government, Janke said. The longtime county executive died earlier this year from a heart attack. He was 74.

Nobody was injured and law enforcement is still looking for the driver following a high speed chase in Fond du Lac County. The chase started shortly before 2:30am Wednesday when a sheriff’s deputy attempted to pull over a speeding vehicle on Highway 26 near Willow Creek Road in the township of Waupun. The chase continued south onto Hwy 151 into Dodge County, then northbound back into Fond du Lac County where the suspect vehicle ran over stopsticks on Highway TC. The driver stopped the vehicle near Palmer Road and fled on foot through a nearby cornfield. K9 units and the Sheriff’s Office Drone Team conducted an extensive search but were unable to locate the driver.

A popular national chain store for tools is coming to Fond du Lac. Harbor Freight Tools says in a press release it is expected to open this fall on North Pioneer Road in the old Best Buy building. Construction is underway. The store is expected to employ between 25 to 30 people. Nationwide Harbor Freight employs 25,000 people at more than 1,300 locations.
