OAK ISLAND, N.C. — A Hickory man drowned on Sunday at Oak Island, and town officials say the call was among more than half a dozen water rescue calls that day. Officials said the Oak Island Fire Department, Oak Island Police Department, and Oak Island Water Rescue were all dispatched to 25th Place East for a swimmer in distress around 2 p.m.

Oak Island, N.C. — The Town of Oak Island confirmed that there was a fatal drowning just after 2 p.m. on Sunday in Oak Island. “Within minutes, responders arrived to find 52-year-old Kevin Whitley of Hickory, NC had been pulled to shore and was being administered CPR by bystanders. Emergency Medical Personnel performed all available resuscitation efforts for over 30 minutes, before pronouncing Mr. Whitley as deceased,” a press release from the Town of Oak Island said.

HICKORY, N.C. — Weeks after the Hickory Police Department said four teens were accused of killing a man at his apartment, officers now say a fifth suspect is in custody.
