What a weird week

This week has been a strange one already. So, this column is going to be a little strange. Probably a little disjointed. I’d originally planned to do a bit about the meaningless of music genre labels. With Dolly Parton being inducted into the rock hall of fame, and seminal rocker Jerry Lee Lewis joining bluegrass icon Keith Whitley in the country hall, it seemed like a good focus for a column, and might be again some day.

Constantly changing word meanings is very annoying to us oldtimers

Today I want to complain about the growing misuse, in my opinion, of the trendy term “side hustle” by various Internet businesses and media commentators. Dictionary.com defines it today merely as a second job to supplement your income, what used to be called “moonlighting” way back when.

AS WE SEE IT: Was voting hurt by fewer polling places?

Carter County cast a total of 4,031 votes in the 2022 primary election. That’s down a little over previous years. A quick look back over our previous election stories shows that in 2020 the total number of primary voters were up quite a bit. When will the splash pad open?

The splash pad in the Grayson Sports Park will be open this summer. Most of the elements have been installed, and they’ve even had it running a few times on manual, park manager Grant Harper said during the last regular meeting of the park board. But before they can automate the sequences, they need to get electric installed – something Harper said he was expecting later that same day. Then they need to get fencing installed, both around the splash pad for the safety of children, and around the controls area.
