Cape County deputy involved in shooting incident UPDATE suspect deceased

A Cape Girardeau County deputy sheriff was involved in a shooting incident Wednesday afternoon. Around 12:25 p.m., a Cape Girardeau County Deputy initiated a traffic stop on I-55 for a registration violation. A pursuit ensued, and the vehicle turned onto State Route D. The suspect vehicle slid off the road and became inoperable. When the vehicle stopped, the driver aggressively exited the vehicle while holding a knife. The preliminary investigation revealed the deputy deployed his department-issued taser, which had no effect on the suspect. However, the suspect continued to approach the deputy, who then fired his department-issued firearm, striking the suspect one time. The suspect was treated at the scene and transported to a local hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The suspect has been identified as James Langley. At the request of Sheriff Dickerson, the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Division of Drug and Crime Control continues to investigate this incident.
