The incident happened just after 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, when park rangers were called to an area outside the campground where Ian Spendlove, of Santa Clara, was said to be trapped under the sand.

(Kanab, UT) — A teen boy is dead after a sand dune collapsed on top of him at a Utah state park. Officials say 13-year-old Ian Spendlove died Saturday at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park near Kanab. Spendlove was reportedly digging a tunnel underneath the dune when it fell in, burying him. First responders were able to revive him, but doctors could not find any brain activity and pronounced him dead on Sunday. Park officials say the boy’s death is still being investigated.
