Hiking Decorah: Lovely Nature in a Beautiful Town

I am a Wartburg Graduate and played soccer through my college years, so usually when I made the trip to Decorah it was to "beat up" on the Norsemen (Luther College). This time my 2-hour trip to Decorah, was to enjoy the town for what it was. No rivalry attached, just some beautiful sites to take in with my wife.

Saturday morning was full of rain but that didn’t stop families from heading out to the farm for breakfast with the cows. Rushford Village looks at road safety

At the June 21 Rushford Village Council meeting, City Engineer Derek Olinger, of Bolton & Menk, questioned the city on the direction regarding some serious sloping on the edges along County Line Drive. The rural gravel road winds up a steep hill section and is subject to slope instability and erosion issues.

Free summer music series at Historic Forestville

Historic Forestville and the Friends of Forestville have partnered with the Preston Area Community Foundation to present a free concert series at the historic site in Forestville/Mystery Cave State Park this summer. The music series opened with a square dance led by Bob Bovee, Pop Wagner and Anni Spring on June 11. Upcoming events feature rootsy music by local favorites River Crossing (4-6 p.m., July 2), an original Opry style show in the barn with Becky Schlegel (6-8 p.m., July 23), Root River Jam (6:30-8:30 p.m., July 30), and will be capped off by one of Minnesota’s most popular musicians, Charlie Parr (7:30-9 p.m., August 27).

Peering at the Past Houston was the area’s pre-eminent bicentennial city

In 1975, Lt. Gov. Rudy Perpich visited Houston to personally present the city with a bicentennial flag as an official Bicentennial community. In 1976, the entire nation was celebrating the nation’s 200th birthday. However, few Minnesota communities so extensively observed the occasion as did Houston, which enjoyed a year-long celebration. On Easter weekend, La Crescent drew widespread attention while hosting not only the Minnesota Bicentennial Wagon Train but also serving as the assembling point for wagon trains from North Dakota, South Dakota and Iowa.

State veterans home scheduled to open next summer

Local and county officials, veterans home committee members, and interested citizens met for an in-person meeting at the Preston Servicemen’s Club on June 21. Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs Commissioner Larry Herke opened the meeting. The focus of this meeting was the need to find and contract with community suppliers for services.

Eagle Bluff to host nature preschool open house

While nature preschools are not a new concept, the first nature preschool in Southeast Minnesota opened at Eagle Bluff Environmental Learning Center in the fall of 2020. With the 2021-2022 preschool term in the books, Eagle Bluff is holding an open house on Saturday, July 9 from 9-11a.m. to invite more preschool parents and caregivers to learn about this exciting, innovative model of early childhood education. Enrollment for the 2022-2023 preschool term at Eagle Bluff is now open.

Darlene Gengler Rommes

Darlene Gengler Rommes, age 84, of Caledonia, died peacefully Sunday, June 26, 2022, at Gundersen Medical Center, La Crosse, Wis. She was born July 7, 1937, in Caledonia, to Erwin and Ruth (Schroeder) Diersen. Darlene started working as a nurse’s aid at Caledonia Hospital when she was 17. She married Ray Gengler on January 18, 1958. She was also a waitress and cook at Elmer’s Supper Club. Darlene and Ray took over Caledonia Cold Storage (Sno-Pac) in 1970. She and Ray continued to run Sno-Pac until she retired at the age of 70. After Ray died in 1999, she married Donnie Rommes in 2001. Donnie passed away in 2011.

Drug arrest in Spring Valley

According to Fillmore County Sheriff John DeGeorge, on Thursday June 16, Fillmore County Sheriff’s Office Investigators and Deputies along with the Southeast Minnesota Violent Crime Enforcement Team executed a search warrant at 605 Division Avenue in the city of Spring Valley. The search warrant was the result of a drug investigation conducted by the Fillmore County Sheriff’s Office.
