Death investigation underway after shooting at home in Jefferson County

SUMNER, Wis. — Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating a shooting at a home in Jefferson County. Deputies were called to a home in the Town of Sumner just before 12:15 a.m. for a report of gunshots. A person was seen walking away from the home. That person was later arrested.

Waukon Corn Days, Crazy Days events draw large crowds ...

The Waukon Corn Days celebration this past weekend kicked off with two main events Thursday evening, August 4. Pictured above, a sizable crowd filled both food stands at the Allamakee County Fairgrounds in Waukon for the traditional sweet corn meal, with an abundance of other activities available for all ages to help celebrate the annual Corn Days event. The annual Corn Days parade through Waukon followed the meal, with numerous people lining the parade route throughout the community. Friday and Saturday, August 5 and 6 continued the draw to Waukon with Crazy Days specials at local businesses, coinciding with the annual tax free weekend observed in the state of Iowa. New flower farm blossoms near Monona

Collection reflects farming history

Rowland Jones, of rural Monona, has the area’s largest collection of model tractors, farm machinery and other agricultural toys. He has been officially collecting since 1978. “Everybody wants to know how many I have,” Rowland said. “I do not know. I’ve never counted them.”

Nicholas J. Dietz

Nicholas J. Dietz passed away on Sept. 25, 2021. He was born in May of 1945 in Postville. The world has been less bright since Nicholas J. Dietz left it behind. Gone, but certainly not forgotten, are all the stories he used to tell, the “inventions” he came up with, and the projects he was always working on.

Healthcare Faces of the Future for 6th-8th grades ... Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) and Veterans Memorial Hospital have teamed up to provide a day for 6th-8th graders to explore the many health care careers that are available to them. The event will be held Wednesday, September 14, which is a teacher in-service day with no school. The event will run from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Waukon area native Joe Byrnes receives Governor’s Service Award in Wisconsin

Waukon area native honored as Volunteer of the Year ... Waukon area native Joe Byrnes (center in above photo) was bestowed a Governor of Wisconsin Service Award at a late-May ceremony held in Madison, WI. Byrnes was honored with a Volunteer of the Year Award for Southwest Wisconsin for his work with Goodwill of South Central Wisconsin’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program. Behavioral Tele-health Services continue at Veterans Memorial Hospital Clinic-Waukon

Behavioral Tele-health Services ... The new, convenient behavioral tele-health services are available at the Veterans Memorial Hospital Medical Clinic in Waukon. The contracted tele-health company provides the clinic with its own medical provider who specializes in psychiatry and can help with medication management. Patients meet privately with the behavioral tele-health provider in this room, pictured above. The clinic will also have a full-time nurse practitioner this fall who specializes in behavioral health.
