Area athletes earn All-State honors

Six area high school baseball players have been recognized by the Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) as members of the prestigious All-State team for the 2022 baseball season. Las Animas High School sophomore TJ Ortiz earned the top honor regionally, being named to the Class 2A Second Team All-State.

A Memorial Mass for Lamar resident, Manuelita C. Saldaña will be held at 10am Monday July 11th, 2022 at the St. Francis de Sales/Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church with Rev. Ernesto Rodriquez as celebrant. A rosary service will be held prior to the mass at 9:30am at the church with Deacon Allan Medina reciting. A Rite of Committal will be held at Fairmount Cemetery.

Long Time Gone: Haswell Celebrates the Glorious Fourth

If there is one holiday that seems to call for being celebrated in a small town located on the wide, open plains of Southeastern Colorado, it’s the fourth of July. Just the thought conjures up images of parades, picnics with hot dogs and watermelon, three legged races where it’s difficult to know who’s having more fun—participants or spectators. And, of course, the entire event culminates in a fireworks display that casts pink and white light on upturned faces and inspires sounds of awe from a crowd sitting in lawn chairs they’ve brought from home.

Lamar Council Discusses Tiny Homes Regulations, Accepts Brownsfield Grant

The Lamar City Council, under the June 27th consent agenda, approved Ordinance No. 1523 which amends the Lamar Municipal Code, encouraging the residents to enjoy and safely use North Gateway Park. The body of the ordinance pertains to an off-leash area for dogs at the park and use of a future designated archery range. Ordinance No. 1254 was also passed and sets a program for identifying and registering vacant commercial buildings and provides for the responsibilities of owners of vacant buildings and structures as well as to work to speed the rehabilitation of those properties. Ordinance No. 1255 annexes the Farm Credit of Southern Colorado property at 1301 East Olive Street into the boundaries of the City of Lamar.

Ronald "Ron" Scobee

Ronald “Ron” Scobee, 72, went home to be with the Lord on June 28, 2022. He was born in Lamar, Colorado on July 10, 1949, to Eugene and Alberta Joy Scobee. He grew up in the Walsh and Two Buttes area in southern Colorado. From the age of 5 to 18, he worked on his grandfather and father’s farms in the fields.
