The Rural Fire Protection program, managed by the Arkansas Department of Agriculture’s Forestry Division, received $279,562.45 as part of the 2021 Volunteer Fire Assistance Grant from the United States Forest Service to purchase and distribute 87 Wildfire Suppression Kits to rural volunteer fire departments. The kits include equipment and gear necessary for the safe suppression of wildfires. In southwest Arkansas, fire departments who received the kits include Kirby, Washington, De Queen, Arden, and Winthrop.

The United States Postal Service has announced a temporary suspension of operations for the Murfreesboro Post Office. Yesterday’s announcement cited a bat infestation as the reason for the closure. Officials said there are no identified health risks to employees or the public and the move was made as a precautionary measure. The process to remove the bats and relocate them to another area is expected to take a few weeks. While that process is ongoing, the postal services will be relocated to the Murfreesboro City Hall and Water Department at 204 East Main. Hours of operation will be Monday through Friday from 8:30 to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. There will be no postal services provided on Saturday or Sunday.

Having fallen behind their progress goals to this point, the group Vote Pike County Arkansas Wet (VPCAW) will be having their second mail-out this week. Unlike the first effort earlier this year, all registered voters of the county will receive a pair of cards in the mail this time around.

The Bismarck Public School Board held its latest meeting on Monday, June 13th and it had plenty of fireworks before the 4th of July. It all started with former Bismarck High hockey coach and concerned citizen Brad Miller speaking about his concerns over the board's conduct over the last year.
