East Helena basketball teams sweep Deer Lodge in varsity debuts

EAST HELENA — As far as debuts go, things went pretty well in East Helena Friday night. It was the first-ever varsity action for the boys and girls basketball teams against Class B's Deer Lodge. And on their home court, packed with fans for the first time, the Vigilantes notched two historic wins 74-42 (boys) and 57-47 (girls) for the first varsity wins in program history.

BUTTE — Eyston Lakkala has already made plenty of memories on Bob Green Field. He's looking forward to delivering some more big plays there. The Butte Central senior running back signed with Montana Tech on Friday, ensuring that he'll play for his hometown college and continue playing on the field that he "knows by heart."

All three of Holmes’ matches ended in a pin in the combined 126- and 132-pound division. After falling to Carson Harris of Havre, Holmes stuck Jack Gillen of Havre in the third period. Holmes closed his day with a loss to Alex Wahl of Cutbank.

LAS VEGAS — Deer Lodge's Chase Brooks had a big opening night at the National Finals Rodeo on Thursday at the Thomas and Mack Center. Brooks, who was third in last year's NFR standings and is making his fourth consecutive appearance, scored an 88.5 aboard Sankey Pro Rodeo's Pendleton Whisky's Marquee to share first place with Zeke Thurston of Big Valley, Alberta, and pocket $24,167.
