Laurel County Sheriff's deputy honored

Laurel County Sheriff's Deputy Tommy Houston received an award from Governor Andy Beshear for his arrest of impaired drivers in the county over the past year. Houston made 63 arrests during 2020 for impaired driving. He also received a Louisville Slugger bat for a third-place award in department size, statewide.

Outdoor events bringing people to county

Laurel County is promoting outdoor events and that promotion is paying off well in tourism dollars. Kelly Burton, co-executive director of the London-Laurel County Tourism Commission, told board members that recent events have brought large numbers of tourists to the area. Burton reported that the ASA (Archery Shooters Association), held from June 3 through June 6, brought in over 2,000 people.

Shooting complaint leads to meth bust

Laurel County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a shooting complaint Tuesday night in southern Laurel County that resulted in a drug trafficking arrest. Deputies arrested Richard Kilgore, 46, of London, on Hanes Baker Road, off of U.S. 25, on charges of first-degree trafficking in controlled substance – methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, and public intoxication – controlled substance.

Corbin Career Center bond sale better than expected

Last Thursday’s bond sale to fund construction of the new Corbin Career Center resulted in better interest rates than school officials expected. The winning bid carried a 2.024 percent net interest cost, which is a low interest rate and less than expected. The winning bidder didn’t take the full bond discount, which will result in an additional $72,000 for the contingency fund, Superintendent Dave Cox told the Corbin Board of Education during June 17 monthly meeting.

The music is going to continue to burn the woods down at Laurel Cove Amphitheater in Pineville, KY in July and August with a double-header of shows each month. On July 9th and 10th we have two Kentucky song-writing masters on back to back nights, with the legendary Chris Knight (with a full band in tow) along with Tiffany Williams and Lance Rogers on Friday. The following night we have one of the Commonwealth’s most skilled mountain poets: Beatyville’s own Ian Noe, featuring support from Caleb Caudle and Laurel Lewis. Then on August 6th and 7th, we’ll be starting it off with a night of incendiary bluegrass music, with North Carolina’s Town Mountain headlining, with Wolfpen Branch and Cole Chaney in support. To cap the series off we welcome two of Cincinnati’s finest, our good friend and Oh Boy Recording Artist Arlo McKinley, with very special guest Jeremy Pinnell, in what is going to be a night of solid country gold.

Corbin Police search for woman who attempted to pass counterfeit bills

Corbin Police are continuing to search for two women, who reportedly attempted to pass a counterfeit $100 bill at four local businesses last week. Corbin Police Lt.
