Whistling ducks observed for first time in Jewell County

While at Lovewell Lake last week, Jim Sullivan reported seeing three Black-Bellied Whistling ducks. He believes his may have been the first sighting ever in Jewell County. Sullivan said it was pretty cool to see ducks that aren't supposed to be in this area. He saw them in the cabin cove.

Beloit American Legion claims Smith Center Runner-Up

SMITH CENTER – The Beloit American Legion Post 57 finished as Runners-Up during the Smith Center tournament held over last weekend. Beloit swept the Smith Center doubleheader on Friday with a first game win of 13-5 and a second of 13-3. Beloit defeated Ellinwood 13-3 on Sunday to advance to the Championship game. Beloit took Runners-Up as Alma won the title with an 8- 0 win.

Beat the heat!

Several children and adults have been beating the heat while having fun at the Beloit City Pool as temperatures rise. The National Weather Service has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for Mitchell county for today and tonight (Wednesday) as the heat index is to reach as high as 100-105 degrees extending into Thursday with slight chances of thunderstorms and wind gusts as high as 30 mph. Darrell Ward, 88, of Nelson, Nebraska passed away Tuesday, June 16, 2021 in Deshler. Services are scheduled for Monday, June 21, at 2 p.m. at Megrue-Price Funeral Home in Superior. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Sunday with family present from 4-6 p.m. at Megrue-Price Funeral Home. Burial with military honors will be at Nelson Cemetery in Nelson. Memorials may be made in care of the family.

City of Lebanon to end mask mandate at end of June

The mask mandate in Lebanon will end as of June 30, the City Council voted. The mask ordinance went into effect in August, before the fall term started at Dartmouth College. The Valley News reports several council members said Wednesday they want to allow time for businesses to adapt and give people a final chance to get vaccinated before the ordinance ends.
