PRESTONSBURG, Ky. (WYMT) - The Levisa Fork Paddlefest normally starts on the Levisa Fork of the Big Sandy River in downtown Prestonsburg, but on June 25, due to low water levels and downed trees on the Levisa Fork, folks hit the waters of Dewey Lake at Jenny Wiley State Resort Park instead.

Rainbow Bridge 5K raises $16K for animal shelter

Floyd County came one step closer to realizing the dream of a new animal shelter, as the first-ever Rainbow Bridge 5K Run/Walk was held June 18 in Prestonsburg. Money raised during the event will go towards the construction of a new animal shelter in Floyd County. The event featured food vendors, live music and an auction.

Matt Tackett Named President of Southern Economic Development Council

This month, the Southern Economic Development Center (SEDC), North America's oldest and largest professional association for economic development, named Morehead State University alumnus Matt Tackett (Class of 2005, 2007) its president. He will be replacing retiring president Gene Stinson and implementing the organization's mission to provide information, guidance and leadership to the American South's economic development practitioners.

Floyd Co Sex Offender Arrested Again

A Floyd Co man has been arrested after failure to comply with his sex offender registration. According to reports, 59 year-old Larry Martin of Prestonsburg, was charged back in 2021 of sexually abusing a child under the age of 12. He pleaded guilty in February to a lesser charge of unlawful transaction with a minor and was sentenced to time served, but required to register as a sex offender for the next 20 years. Martin was arrested this past Monday and was charged with failure to comply with sex offender registration. There has been no information released on how he allegedly failed to comply with his sex offender registry, but he was lodged in the Big Sandy Regional Detention Center in Paintsville.

Kory Thacker named Betsy Layne Girls’ HC

FLOYD COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - The Lady Cats have a new leader going into the 2022 season. Kory Thacker was introduced as head coach of the Betsy Layne girls’ basketball team. ”Being the first time coaching girls going from coaching boys obviously there’s a big transition, but at the end of the day it’s basketball,” said Thacker. “We’ve done exceptionally well this summer. It’s a great building block for where we want to be.”

Prestonsburg to have baseball/softball fields turfed

PRESTONSBURG, Ky. (WYMT) - The 15th Region may have found a permanent home for their baseball and softball tournaments. According to Prestonsburg mayor Les Stapleton, the baseball and softball fields at Stonecrest Golf Course will have their infields turfed. With the move, the city hopes to make the complex a permanent home for the 15th Region baseball and softball tournaments.
