Bulldogs Are Once Again Class 4A Champs

Congratulations to the Independence Bulldog Tennis team for capturing the 4A State Championship for the 2nd year in a row. The team was led by a championship performance from Brecken Bertie and Camdon Julian in the doubles bracket at T.H. Vaughn tennis courts in Winfield Saturday. Additionally, Kale Groff was runner-up in the singles bracket. This is the 5th state title in the IHS boys tennis program history.

Wellington tennis team finishes 4th at 4A State tourney, losing on another tiebreaker

Wellington finished fourth as a team, losing the tiebreaker to Topeka Hayden for third place and getting them a team trophy at the Class 4A State Tournament in Winfield Saturday. Dexter Dennis has decided to finish his college basketball career in the SEC. The Wichita State transfer guard announced his pledge to Texas A&M on Friday. Dennis is described as an athletic wing who can play as a stretch-four. Thomas “Tom” Clay Riggs, 77, died on May 13, 2022, in Derby in the presence of family. Tom was born on August 21, 1944, to Howard and Frances Riggs in Winfield. He grew up in Winfield, graduating from Winfield High School in 1962. Tom spent time attending Cowley County Community College before eventually attending Southwestern College. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Science in 1969. Tom received his Master of Science in Biology from Emporia State University in 1978.
