Close ties brings Baker firefighters 9/11 honor duty

For Tom Bruha, it was a simple decision to make, considering the close ties that the Baker Rural Fire Department has with the Bowman Fire Department. The connection has been strong between the two fire departments for several years. “We got involved here about three or four years ago. We actually joined the North Dakota Firefighter’s Association. We send members of our department up to places like Minot for the North Dakota State Fire School,” he said in February.

Gas savings: The cheapest station in Bowman

(BOWMAN, ND) Gas prices vary across in the Bowman area, but if you’re willing to head for the cheapest station, you could be saving up to $0.06 per gallon. According to a survey by GasBuddy, Cenex at 13 1St Ave Nw was the cheapest station in the area, with regular listed at $2.89 per gallon at the pumps Wednesday. That was compared to Kum & Go at 411 1St Ave Sw , where a gallon of regular was selling for $2.95.

Joseph Richard Whalen, 95

Joseph Richard Whalen, 95 of Spearfish, passed away on May 25, 2021. Joe was born on January 15, 1926, to Patrick and Mathilda (Youngman) Whalen in Scranton, ND. He attended grade school in Scranton, then secondary school at St. Mary’s High School in New England, ND. There he played basketball and as well as the trumpet. In 1943, he joined the Air Force as a bombardier gunner and was subsequently discharged in 1946. He attended Rapid City College of Business and after graduation he returned to Scranton entering the family business, Whalen Brothers Grocery. On Nov. 6, 1951, he married Bertha Maliske. God blessed their union with five children. In 1963, Joe began selling life insurance for Lincoln National. Joe believed in community service-serving on numerous boards and committees in Bowman and Scranton. He was commander of the American Legion for which he was a member for seventy years. He was eventually elected from the 39th District to North Dakota Legislature. He chaired the Industry, Business and Labor Committee. He was elected to the intern Legislative Council as well. He was appointed chairman of both Medical Malpractice and the Oil and Gas studies. After serving for twelve years and respecting term limits, he decided not to run for another term. Joe never thought of himself and as a politician but rather as a public servant and recognized it was the time for new people and ideas.

Daniel Nichols, 80

Nichols, Daniel “Dan” A., age 80 of Lakeville, MN, passed away peacefully Jun. 1, 2021. Preceded in death by his wife, Diane, parents, Isaac and Louise Nichols, and siblings, Michael Nichols, Colleen Reimer, and Jack Nichols. Dan is survived by his loving children, Tammi (Clay) Pearson, Kevin Nichols, and Jeff Nichols; grandchildren, Payton and Cole Pearson, Ellie and Grace Nichols, and Jarrod Nichols; sisters, Gloria Ronning, Rosalee Jorgensen, Roberta Swanke, and Pam Schuster; also, by other relatives and friends. A Celebration of Life for Dan and his wife Diane, who passed away in November 2020, will take place for both Dan and Diane, 10 a.m. Saturday, Jun.12, 2021, at St. Charles Catholic Church, 202 1st Ave. SW, Bowman, ND. Interment, Ft. Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, MN at a later date. In lieu flowers, memorial to American Cancer Society of MN or MN Hospice Foundation.
