Illinois State Police Investigating Fatal Crash Following Police Pursuit; Victim Identified

Illinois State Police have been called in to investigate the police pursuit that ended in a fatal crash near Pleasant Plains Friday night. The incident started in Menard County, when a deputy attempted to stop a car for multiple traffic violations. But the driver refused to stop and sped away. Police pursued it to the intersection of Yankeetown Road and Tomlin Road in Sangamon County, where the vehicle crashed around 7:40pm. The driver has been identified as 65-year-old Randy DeGroot of Springfield.

Decatur man denies charges he shattered woman's jaw

DECATUR — Prosecutors accuse a Decatur man of hitting a woman in the face so hard he shattered her jaw in three places. James T. Smith, 57, appeared in Macon County Circuit Court May 4 and pleaded not guilty to a charge of aggravated domestic battery. A check of Macon County Jail records Sunday showed he remained incarcerated with bail set at $100,000, meaning he must post a bond of $10,000 to be freed.

Driver killed during police chase

A deadly crash involving a driver that tried to escape a traffic stop is under investigation, according to Illinois State Police. This happened Friday evening around 7. A Menard County Sheriff’s Deputy attempted to make the traffic stop on a vehicle for numerous traffic violations. ISP says for unknown reasons the driver failed to stop and drove away from the deputy.

Decatur man faces charges of beating woman, firing warning shot

DECATUR — A Decatur man is facing charges he beat a woman and then fired a warning shot over the shoulder of a man to scare him. Brad E. Allen, 60, was arraigned May 12 in Macon County Circuit Court on one count of the aggravated discharge of a weapon. Decatur man slashed with knife after attacking pedestrian, police report

DECATUR — Eduardo Jusino is pleading not guilty to a charge of aggravated battery after prosecutors say he launched an attack on a random passerby in Decatur.
