Callers falsely claim to be from sheriff’s office

KEARNEY — The Buffalo County Sheriff’s Office is receiving reports of local numbers calling, leaving voicemails and claiming to be the sheriff’s office. The callers are asking those who answer for money to dismiss fake debt or warrants. According to Sheriff Neil Miller the calls are a scam, and law enforcement will not contact the public asking for gift cards for payment of any kind.

Man charged with second random attack of woman in Kearney last month

KEARNEY — A man accused of randomly attacking a woman in Kearney now is accused of a similar offense two days earlier. Bryan Morales-Contreras, 23, of Kearney was charged earlier this week in a Buffalo County Court warrant with attempted first-degree false imprisonment of a woman, a felony, on May 2. He already is facing a charge of first-degree false imprisonment and assault by strangulation or suffocation, both felonies, in a May 4 incident.
