Searsport is finally celebrating its 175th birthday with a bang

SEARSPORT, Maine — A lot of things — good and bad, dramatic and mundane — can happen to a town in 175 years. In Searsport, one of those things that happened was the way that the coronavirus pandemic interrupted the community’s long-planned 175th birthday party. Organizers were only able to hold the reenactment of Searsport’s first official town meeting in February 2020 before all events and gatherings were put on hold.

Bangor Neighbors Help Take 1.5 Pounds of Fentanyl Off Streets

Using the numerous complaints from neighbors, authorities were able to arrest and charge two Bangor people for trafficking fentanyl. There was 1.5 pounds of fentanyl seized from this investigation. 53-Year-old Craig Pelkey and 37-year-old Sarah Denbow of Bangor were both charged with Class "A" aggravated trafficking of schedule W drugs....

Parade held to celebrate Belfast veteran’s 102nd birthday

BELFAST, Maine (WABI) -A birthday parade in Belfast Thursday afternoon honored a local veteran. Glenn Hills is celebrating more than a century of life. ”Today is all about Mr. Hills.” said Jim Roberts, Operations Manager for the Belfast VFW. “He’s 102 years old. He’s served through 3 wars. Been a great asset to our country. This is his day. This is for him.”

Elver season comes to an end

ELLSWORTH — The multimillion-dollar elver fishery closed on June 7, with the average price per pound climbing back up to where it was before the pandemic. Dealers reported buying a total of 8,960 pounds out of the 9,620-pound state quota. The eels fetched $16,567,778 for an average price per pound of $1,849, according to preliminary data from the Department of Marine Resources. That price was well up from earlier in the season, when the average price was about $1,000 per pound.

Bangor’s Summer Meal Program Extends Dates Through August For Kids In Need

Kids under the age of 18, in the Bangor/Brewer area, will have an opportunity to get both breakfast and lunch, for free, during the summer months. The effort to combat food insecurity across the state is something many area agencies and organizations have been working on for several years. According to website, "The Summer Food Service Program was established to ensure low-income children continue to receive nutritious meals during the summer months when school is not in session. Free meals that meet the federal nutritional guidelines are provided to all children 18 years old and younger at approved SFSP sites in areas with significant concentrations of low-income children."
