Shen volunteers prep for fireworks show

(Shenandoah) -- Final preparations are underway for another Independence Day fireworks show in Shenandoah. Huge crowds are expected in Sportsman's Park Saturday evening at around 9:30 for the annual fireworks extravaganza--the culmination of Star Spangled Shenandoah activities throughout the day. Shenandoah Police Chief Josh Gray and Bryston Dunkeson of the city's water department are coordinators of this year's program. Shenandoah man booked on pair of charges

(Shenandoah) -- A Shenandoah man was arrested on a pair of charges Wednesday night. The Shenandoah Police Department says 36-year-old Dustin Drew Jackson of Shenandoah was arrested around 10:30 p.m. after officers were dispatched to the 300 block of Wabash Avenue for damage to a residence. Following an investigation, authorities say Jackson was arrested for 2nd degree criminal mischief and interference with official acts.

Marshall named full-time Shen fire chief

(Shenandoah) -- Shenandoah now has a full-time fire chief. Meeting in regular session Tuesday evening, the Shenandoah City Council unanimously approved the rate and salary of Justin Marshall as full-time chief at $21.64 per hour. A department veteran for nearly 20 years, Marshall succeeded Ron Weston as the city's volunteer fire chief in January, 2020. Speaking on KMA's "Morning Line" program Wednesday morning, Shenandoah Mayor Roger McQueen says both the city and the fire department felt it was time for a full-time chief.

Iowans Are Asked To Attend Funeral For WWII Veteran With Only One Relative

(Shenandoah, IA) — Iowans are encouraged to attend next week’s funeral for a World War Two veteran who’s only living relative is on the East Coast. Hugh Bell of Shenandoah died June Second at age 98. Bell’s only relative is a nephew in Warwick, Rhode Island, so Iowa Funeral Directors Association manager Taylor Teags wants as many people as possible at Bell’s funeral. Bell was drafted into the Army in 1943, earned his pilot’s wings and an officer’s commission in 1944, and trained pilots in the A-20 and A-26 light bombers. The graveside service for Bell will be held at the Rose Hill Cemetery at Eleven A-M on July Eighth and will include military honors conducted by the Shenandoah American Legion Color Guard.

Shen council hears Citywide Cleanup Days report

(Shenandoah) -- Costs were up, but the actual amount of materials collected was down in this year's Shenandoah Citywide Cleanup Days. By unanimous vote Tuesday evening, the Shenandoah City Council approved a report on the 2022 event held in May, as well as a check to cover the costs. In his report to the council, Shenandoah Sanitation Operations Manager Dave Riley says the amount of roll-offs sent to the Page County Landfill from the three-day event dropped from 45 in 2021 to 33 this year.

Farmer removes fence blocking Steamboat Trace Trail just in time for regional bike ride

A cease-fire has been reached in a years-long fight between a farmer and a natural resources district over a hike-bike trail. The fight boils down to a disagreement over who should pay for fencing to separate the farmer’s land from the Steamboat Trace Trail. Otoe County farmer Bob Trail said he expected the Nemaha Natural Resources District to pay for the fence. NRD officials say they couldn’t do that for one farmer and not other landowners.

Fremont County reports 2 Monday arrests

(Sidney) -- The Fremont County Sheriff's Office reports a pair of Monday arrests in separate incidents. The Fremont County Sheriff's Office says 35-year-old Robert Reafling of Sidney was arrested around 2:04 p.m. after deputies were called to a residence in Sidney for a report of a fight in progress. Authorities say witnesses advised a male was on top of and assaulting a female outside of a residence, and later entered the residence. Upon arrival, deputies could hear a disturbance inside the residence and made entry.
