Kathryn Ann “Kathy” Downey (Sweeney), 84, of Brooksville, Florida died Thursday, June 17, 2021 at Bayonet Point Medical Center in Hudson, Florida. Kathy was born August 1, 1936 in Lapeer Michigan. She graduated from Lapeer High School in 1955. After marrying her husband, Gerald “Jerry” Downey in 1963, she lived and worked in Lapeer until 1984. She then moved to the Mio area. In 2007, Kathryn and her husband, Jerry, moved to Florida to enjoy her final retirement years.

Prison parolee arrested in Coleman on multiple drug offenses

A former prison inmate who was on parole was arrested in Coleman on multiple drug offenses. The Sumter County Sheriff’s Office assisted the Florida Department of Corrections Office of Probation and Parole at about 9 a.m. Monday at 2827 Taylor Ave. in Coleman. During a routine search, 38-year-old David Joseph McKenzie was found to be in possession of 55 grams of methamphetamine, 27 grams of marijuana, assorted pills, scales, smoking devices and more than $5,000 in cash.

Fines racking up for son in deceased parents’ home in The Villages

Fines are beginning to rack up for a 40-year-old son living in his deceased parents’ home which has become a neighborhood eyesore in The Villages. The home at 1906 Augustine Drive in the Village of Santo Domingo was the subject of a deed compliance hearing in March before the Community Development District 2 Board of Supervisors. Since that hearing the District has had had to cut the grass twice. A total of $500 in fines has been imposed on the property. If fines reach $1,500, the case will be turned over to District counsel.

A felony battery suspect was arrested in The Villages after a woman called 911. Joshua Thomas Stratton, 30, of Silver Springs, was sitting in the front passenger seat of a 2019 Toyota Corolla that was pulled over shortly after noon Tuesday on El Camino Real, according to an arrest report from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office. A woman in the vehicle said she did not want Stratton to get “in trouble,” but admitted she called 911 because he “was beating her up,” according to the report. A witness said that Stratton struck the woman “several times with a closed fist in the upper torso area.”
