LETTER: Lake name must change out of courtesy to local African Americans

It was with some amusement that I read in the June 10 Star-Exponent how certain Council members voted to rescind last month’s vote to change the name of Lake Pelham. Other members voted to let the original decision stand. Even stranger was that some of these Council members changed sides since their votes last month, claiming pressure from constituents to change their votes one way or the other. Once again, politics has muddled up what should be a straightforward process.

The front-page articles in Virginia mourning the passing of former Sen. John Warner were rightfully long on superlatives. Sen. Warner was described as an “unmatched leader,” a “giant,” and a “dear friend.” To me, he was all that and more. His reputation as a political maverick was well-documented. He was...

Commentary: A very large square peg in a tiny round hole

Comment articles reflect the opinion of the writer(s), not the Rapp News. Comment below or by writing a letter to the editor: editor@rappnews.com. The opinion/editorial by Ron Maxwell in the June 3 edition of the Rappahannock News was a clear, common sense example of persuasive argument. Mr. Maxwell brought a detailed and accurate analysis of what the Rush River Commons development would mean to Rappahannock County as we have known and loved it. He also pointed out far more suitable alternatives for the altruistic, multi-purposed solutions the site seems designed to address.

Piedmont Area Soap Box Derby returns, delivers thrills

A year ago, Sheila Rutherford sat in front of her computer, dreading what she was about to do. Rutherford, the race director for the Piedmont Area Soap Box Derby, had just typed up an email announcing the cancellation of the 2020 race due to the COVID-19 pandemic. She knew she had to send it to all the participants, but she agonized over the widespread disappointment that one click would bring.
