2022 has been named the Year of the Lilac by the National Garden Bureau, and — as a point of pride for Michiganders — Mackinac Island just so happens to be home to more than 250 varieties of the purple plant. Next month, the city will celebrate this distinction when it hosts its 74th annual Lilac Festival.

For a relatively quaint little place, Michigan’s Mackinac Island does summer celebrations in a big way – and nothing is larger than its annual Lilac Festival. This year, islanders and visitors alike will be ringing in the 74th annual festival celebrating the heavily scented blooms that hold a unique place in Mackinac’s history. The 10-day event will include a huge parade down the Main Street section of the island’s M-185 – the only highway in Michigan where cars are banned – as well as live music, lilac tours, a 10K run/walk and the crowning of the festival’s Lilac Queen. 

MACKINAC ISLAND – Memorial Day will get the Mackinac Island treatment during a short ceremony planned for next week. Mackinac State Historic Parks will hold a brief and informal Memorial Day observance on Monday, May 30 at 8:30 a.m. The ceremony will begin behind Fort Mackinac at the Avenue of Flags and continue at the Post Cemetery.

PICKFORD – Pickford baseball fell to Manistique in game one of a non-conference doubleheader 14-9, but the Panthers picked up a 10-6 win in the second game to split with the Emeralds on Monday night. The Panthers move to 9-19-1 overall on the season.

In neighborhoods, on your local bike trails and even in bike lanes on city streets, it’s not unusual to see people whizzing by on e-bikes with pedal-assist features or with the motorized throttles fully engaged.
