Meet the Bucks scheduled for Friday; season tickets available for renewal this week

The Breckenridge High School Athletic Department will host the annual Meet the Bucks event from 8 to 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12, at Buckaroo Stadium. The event will be a chance for the community to meet the junior varsity and varsity football players and coaches, JV and varsity volleyball players and coaches, cross-country runners and coaches, 2022-23 varsity cheerleaders, and the Pride of Breckenridge Buckaroo Band.

Article X of the 1845 Constitution, adopted by the Legislature prior to our admittance into the Union, enshrines the support, diffusion, and maintenance of public schools as a requirement by the state’s Legislature. Average gas prices have dropped almost 75 cents per gallon in past month

Average gasoline prices in Texas have fallen 15.9 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.50/g today, Aug. 8, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 13,114 stations in Texas. Prices in Texas are 74.5 cents per gallon lower than a month ago and stand 65.7 cents per gallon higher than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has declined 13.1 cents in the last week and stands at $5.14 per gallon.

Marileigh Miley, 72, of Breckenridge, passed away peacefully surrounded by family and loved ones on Thursday, August 4, 2022. Her funeral service at Bethany Baptist Church will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 10, 2022. Her family will welcome friends for a visitation in the Melton-Kitchens Chapel on Tuesday, August 9, 2022, from 6:00-7:00 p.m.

Reverend Dr. Jack L. Clack

The Reverend Dr. Jack L. Clack (July 8, 1934 – August 3, 2022), a boy who was nurtured in the households of various relatives while growing up in Eastland and Comanche Texas counties, graduated from Carbon High School at the age of 16, married Vera Morris of Moran when they were 18, and graduated from Howard Payne College at age 20. By the time he and Vera were 24, they were full-steam-ahead in nurturing three boys and serving in Baptist churches in Texas and Arkansas. Jack went on to earn his Masters in Christian Education and his Doctorate of Theology degrees. He helped to pioneer the establishment of chaplaincies in industries across the United States. When he retired as vice president of human resources with Tyson Foods, he threw himself into managing the resources of Vera’s pioneer ranching family’s property in Shackelford and Stephens counties.

James E. Taylor III, 62, of Breckenridge, passed away on Tuesday, August 2. His cremation has been entrusted to Melton-Kitchens Funeral Home. The family will have a memorial service at a later date.

Ted Culver, age 73, of Breckenridge, passed away Wednesday, August 3, 2022. Graveside funeral services with full military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, August 5, at the Breckenridge Cemetery with Michael Hildreth officiating. Interment will follow under the direction of Morehart Mortuary. Visitation will be held just prior to the service, at 10 a.m. at Morehart Mortuary.

Stephens County District Attorney’s office announces plea deals for July 2022

Stephens County District Attorney Dee Peavy’s office recently released the following list of plea deals that were made in the 90th Judicial District Court in July 2022:. Tamera Sue Castaneda, 45, Breckenridge, pleaded true to the violations alleged in the State’s Motion to Proceed to Adjudicate for the offense of Delivery of Controlled Substance Four Grams or More but Less Than 200 Grams – Methamphetamine and was sentenced to 10 years confinement in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice – Institutional Division (TDCJ-ID) and ordered to pay remaining fine and court costs.

Stephens County Judge Michael Roach announced today that the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) has advised the Stephens County Sheriff’s Office of a positive rabies case in an “outside” cat near County Road 120 in the southeast part of the county near the Stephens-Eastland county line.

City of Breckenridge begins water meter replacement project this week

This week, workers have started replacing water meters throughout the city of Breckenridge in a project that is expected to last up to two months. The crews will be wearing orange shirts and will be in trucks marked with “Meter Replacement Crew.” The crews will not need to enter residences to complete the replacement, which should take 15-30 minutes at each location.
