Assistance Available Through FSA For Drought Related Expenses

O'NEILL — Holt-Boyd County U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farm Service Agency (FSA) Executive Director, Shawna Mitchell, reminds livestock producers of the availability of financial assistance through the Emergency Assistance for Livestock, Honey Bees, and Farm-Raised Fish Program (ELAP). ELAP is available to qualified producers who have suffered above normal expenses for hauling feed or water to livestock or hauling livestock to forage/grazing acres due to the impacts of drought.

Car Accident On Monday, June 6

A truck from Boyd County towing a horse trailer was involved in a two vehicle accident on Monday afternoon. Only one individual from the other vehicle was taken to the hospital by O'Neill Fire and Rescue with minor injuries. No Burning Ban Issued In Holt And Boyd County

Due to the extremely dry conditions, forecasted winds and warmer temperatures, fire danger will continue to be high throughout the area. Holt County and Boyd County fire authorities have issued a no-burning ban. No burning of any kind is permitted until further notice. Any fire that does ignite may spread quickly and be difficult to control. The burn ban includes no trash burning, campfires, or open burning of any kind. Anyone found to be in violation of the burn ban could be fined and held liable for damages caused by the spread of any fire.

Lady Cards Fall To West Holt

The St. Mary's girls finished their regular season out last week going 16-6, winning over Boyd County 55-38 and falling to West Holt 45-34. In the game against Boyd County the Cards played well in the first half outscoring the Spartans by six in the first quarter. Tthe Spartans kept pace with the Cards in the second scoring 13 points to the Cards 14. The Cards led at the half 29-22.

Boyd County Men Found Guilty Of Cruel Neglect Of Animals & Improper Disposal

On April 8, 2019, the Boyd County Sheriff’s Office, with the help of a criminal investigator of the Nebraska Brand Committee, served a search warrant on the ranch of Thomas and Carl Schuman. As a result of the search warrant, the sheriff’s office took custody of the cattle living on the Schuman ranch. Approximately 710 head of cattle varying in age, weight and gender were transported and sold by the Boyd County Sheriff’s Office at the Shamrock Livestock Market in O’Neill.

Jury finds two Spencer men guilty of charges related to dead cattle on property

SPENCER, Neb. — A jury has found two Spencer men guilty of charges related to hundreds of dead cattle being found dead on their property in 2019. According to Boyd County District Court records, a jury found Carl Schuman, 80, and Thomas Schuman, 74, guilty of two counts of abandonment and cruel neglect of livestock resulting in injury or death and 13 counts of improper disposal of a carcass.
