Boyd County man pleads guilty to kidnapping

ASHLAND, Ky. (WTVQ) — A Boyd County man pleaded guilty Wednesday to kidnapping a woman in May. According to Jonathan Smithers’ plea agreement, on May 1, Smithers assaulted a woman whom he was in a relationship with, and, while using a gun, forced the woman to accompany him to a store. There, he assaulted her with the gun and confined her to the vehicle they were in. Smithers then drove her to the Flatwoods area where he forced her to exit the vehicle, climb fences, trespass on private property and traverse random routes around the area for several hours.

Boyd Co. Man Pleads Guilty to Kidnapping Charge

A Boyd Co man could face a possible sentence of life in prison after pleading guilty to a federal kidnapping charge at the U. S. District Court in Ashland. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Kentucky says Johnathan Lee Smithers, 41, of Catlettsburg entered the plea Wednesday before U.S. District Judge David Bunning. According to Smithers’ plea agreement, on May 1, 2022, Smithers physically assaulted a victim, whose name was not released, with whom he was in a romantic relationship. Then, under threat of force and using a firearm, Smithers made the victim accompany him to a store, where he brandished the weapon, assaulted her with the weapon, and confined her in the vehicle. Smithers then drove her to the Flatwoods area.

KSP Arrests Boyd Co Man for Possessing Child Sexual Abuse Material

A Boyd Co man is facing charges after Police conducted an undercover investigation related to child sexual abuse material. Arrested was Matthew McDavid, 45, of Catlettsburg. Officers with the Ashland Police Department initiated the investigation, but coordinated efforts with KSP Troopers due to the suspect’s home being outside the Ashland Police Departments jurisdiction. A search warrant was executed at McDavid’s home on July 21 where equipment used in the alleged crimes was seized. Troopers have charged McDavid with ten counts of possessing matter portraying a minor under the age of 12, ten counts of possessing matter portraying a minor over the age of 12 and one count of distributing matter portraying a minor over the age of 12 in a sexual performance. McDavid was lodged in the Boyd Co Detention Center.
