Man killed in rollover crash

BOYD COUNTY, Ky. (WSAZ) - A man from Cannonsburg was killed in a rollover crash. It happened around 4:15 p.m. Tuesday in the 15,000 block of Ellington Run Road. The Boyd County Sheriff’s Department says they responded to the report of a single vehicle rollover accident. Deputies found an unresponsive man in the road.

Stabbing suspect indicted

ASHLAND A man accused of stabbing his boyfriend and another person in the middle of traffic June 7 has been indicted by a Boyd County grand jury. Brady L. Shelton, 56, of Ashland, is accused of getting in a knife fight June 7 with his boyfriend and another person inside a vehicle traveling eastbound on U.S. 23. The car stopped and Shelton fled — he was arrested June 8 after calling for EMS to get treatment for injuries he incurred in the fracas, according to court records.

Man jailed after early-morning stabbing

An early Saturday morning stabbing at the Castle Apartments resulted in one man jailed on a first-degree assault charge. Ashland Police officers were dispatched around 1:23 a.m. to the 2200 block of Winchester Avenue for reports of a stabbing, according to a criminal citation. Upon arrival, the victim told officers he had been stabbed inside an apartment occupied by 51-year-old Charles Ray Miller.

Man who tried to run over officer among indicted

CATLETTSBURG A man accused of attempting to run over an Ashland Police officer with a motorcycle on June 8 has been indicted by a Boyd County grand jury. According to police, Blake A. Meadows, 29, was busted by the officer while attempting to steal a catalytic converter from a car. Catalytic converters act as a filter in the exhaust system for pollutants and fetch a good penny on the scrap market due to the platinum found inside.

Commission approves budget, talks Firkin

ASHLAND The Ashland City Commission unanimously adopted on second reading the 2022 budget at Thursday's meeting, part of a jam-packed agenda. The budget, set to come in at $88.674 million, will include $42.345 million in the general budget and $28.579 million into the utility fund. Like with Boyd County earlier this week, a boost to the budget is a recently passed bond amounting to $12 million for the teardown of the G.B. Johnson building, paying off the police station and other public works projects.

Boyd Fiscal approves opioid settlement

CATLETTSBURG In a 3-1 vote, the Boyd County Fiscal Court voted to approve a settlement agreement with drug manufacturers and distributors who are behind the opioid epidemic. Commissioners Larry Brown, Randy Stapleton and Keith Watts all voted to approve the settlement, which amounts to about 2% of any money received from the settlement. Judge-Executive Eric Chaney voted against, citing concerns about how the move would affect the Second Amendment.

Man found not guilty in 2020 shooting

ASHLAND Former Ashland Blazer soccer player Dwayne “DJ” Kemper was found not guilty Wednesday in connection with a June 2020 shooting. Following a three-day trial in Boyd County Circuit Court, the jury of 11 women and one man returned a not guilty verdict to a sole count of first-degree assault. Deliberations took about an hour for the jury.
