Teachers, staff prepared in advance for Middle School move

Boone Central Middle School, located in Petersburg since 2001, will become part of the Boone Central campus in Albion after construction is completed this summer. Construction has been well underway this spring and early summer in hopes of full completion and move-in before students arrive in the fall.

Cops & Bobbers gets another great turnout

Boone County Cops & Bobbers Fishing Tournament had another excellent turnout of youngsters and parents on Saturday, June 12, at Stevenson’s Lake. Some 160 youth were registered in the fishing contest sponsored by the Boone County Sheriff’s office. Many area law enforcement personnel and volunteers were on.

Cops & Bobbers fishing set Saturday

Cops & Bobbers youth fishing event will be held this Saturday, June 12, at Stevenson’s Lake southwest of Petersburg from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. This year’s Cops & Bobbers will be in honor of Eli Porter. It is open to youth up to age 15, with three age groups competing for prizes. Parents and participants should arrive early and bring their own fishing gear.

John (Jack) Bernard Leifeld

John (Jack) Bernard Leifeld, 92, of Albion, passed away Sunday, June 6, 2021 at Boone County Health Center, Albion. He is survived by five children: Donna (Bob) Werner of Columbus, Jerry (Cindy) Leifeld of Albion, Connie (James) Schindel of Petersburg, Mark Leifeld (Gina Wright) of Norfolk and Ruth (Rick) Molt of Albion, 20 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, brother-in-law Marvin Atteberry of Treynor, IA, along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Middle school students gain outdoor experience at ONP

For the twenty-sixth year 35 incoming seventh and eighth graders from Boone Central and St. Michael’s took part in a summer enrichment program at Olson Nature Preserve on June 1-3. Upon arrival at the preserve, Bob Coakes led students through the seven ecosystems while instructing them on plant and animal life located there. The students then were instructed by Mark Seier about various Nebraska snakes. His message about the benefits of snakes was followed by various hands-on experiences with fox snakes. He also provided a leopard gecko so the students would realize the necessity of acquiring native pets instead of exotic ones.

Stock dog trials at local arena this weekend

A working competition for cattle dogs, the Sandhills Edge Working Dog Show, will be held this Saturday and Sunday, June 12-13, at the Niewohner Arena in the Boone County Agriculture and Education center on the fairgrounds. Kramer All Class Gold highlights Boone Central state track/field performances

The Boone Central Cardinals concluded an outstanding 2021 high school track and field season, which included girls championships in the Mid-State Conference and B-4 District, at the Nebraska State Track and Field Championships in Omaha Friday and Saturday, May 21-22. Following a hiatus in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, teams returned to competition this spring and put a final stamp on a compensatory campaign with the colorful circus of athletic feats at familiar Burke Stadium.

Kramer hits line in disbelief for 300 hurdle win

OMAHA - When he crossed the line, his hands immediately went to his forehead as if to say, 'What just happened?'. What just happened was a gold medal in the 300-meter hurdles, the final high school event of Boone Central senior Ryan Kramer's career. In a personal-best time that also set a school record. Kramer came around the track in 39.66 seconds and won the gold medal.

Cardinal golfers conclude season with district play

Boone Central’s boys golf team wrapped up the 2021 spring season with competition in the C-2 District at Oakland Golf Club May 18. The Cardinals finished 11th in the 15-team field with an 18 hole score of 390. Host Oakland-Craig was the C-2 champion with a 327 team total. Also qualifying for the 2021 Class C Nebraska State Championships were Scotus (329) and Aquinas (331).
