Police Beat for Tuesday, August 9th, 2022

Salem Police arrested a 31-year-old Salem woman for possession of methamphetamine. Maleah Durham was arrested during a Monday night traffic stop in the 500 block of West Main while she was a passenger in the vehicle. Centralia Police arrested 32-year-old Riley Sanders of Ridge Road in Centralia for aggravated assault.

2022 08/16 – Donna Joyce Lowery

Donna Joyce Lowery, 77, of Centralia passed away at Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Mo, on August 6th, 2022. Donna was born January 31, 1945, in Centralia, the daughter of Wayne and Elsie (Benifiel) Etheridge. Donna married Michael Lowery in Clinton County on October 23, 1963, and he survives her.

State Police release details on two crashes both involving two semis on I-57 in Marion County

State Police have released further details on two crashes both involving two trucks in different locations on I-57 in Marion County. The first crash occurred on southbound I-57 near milepost 113 three miles south of Salem. A preliminary investigation indicates 61-year-old Matthew Shuman of Flora was traveling northbound in the right lane when he lost control of the vehicle, crossed over the grass median, and struck the trailer unit of a southbound truck driven by 55-year-old Mio Drasko of Hoffman Estates. Shuman then continued through the guardrail on the west side of the southbound lanes.

Carl Lindell Anderson, 81, of Johnston City, formerly of Salem, went home to be with his Lord and Savior at 7:18 a.m., Saturday, August 6, 2022, at his home. Lindell was born on August 14, 1940, in Marion to Carl “Preach” and Sylvia (Harris) Anderson. He was united in marriage to Merilee Anne Saxe on November 29, 1958, in Benton. They shared 63 years of marriage together.

Louise Catherine “Wesee” Reed, age 67, of Ashley, passed away Saturday, August 6, 2022 at Crossroads Community Hospital in Mt. Vernon. She was born September 19, 1954 in Breese, a daughter of the late Joseph and Clara, nee Thien, Athmer.In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Beer and sister in-law, Judy Athmer.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Department has arrested an Iuka woman on outstanding Clay and Effingham County warrants. Erica Kessler of South Avenue was taken into custody when they responded to an unwanted person report at a home in the 600 block of Slater Road in rural Salem. She was later transferred to the Clay County Jail at Louisville.

Higgins Pleads Guilty in Jefferson County Child Porn Case

MT. VERNON – A 27-year-old Mt. Vernon man was sentenced to 15 years in prison Tuesday after he pleaded guilty to three of 10 counts of possessing child pornography. The seven other Class 2 felony counts of possessing child pornography against Jacob Higgins were dismissed per the plea agreement.

McLeansboro City Council Set to Meet Tuesday

The McLeansboro City Council is set to gather Tuesday night on 102 West Main Street at City Hall and they have a full agenda planned for the evening. Along with the swearing in of the newly appointed Alderman for Ward #3, they will also be discussing granting approval to allow a double wide trailer at 201 South Douglas. They’ll be discussing approving a location for the Historical Society’s Jail as well as updating swimming pool regulations and potentially authorizing a handful of Resolutions. They’ll discuss approving a TIF reimbursement for McLeansboro Space Center and for MC Sales, LLC. The council will also discuss approving changes to the City of McLeansboro Code Book. The meeting is set to begin at 6PM.

A two semi-truck crash Monday causes delays on I-57

SALEM, IL — Southbound Interstate 57 was closed for more than three hours Monday and traffic diverted through Salem after two semi-trucks were involved in a crash. According to the Salem Fire Protection District, a tire problem possibly caused a partially loaded northbound tanker truck carrying crude oil was go out of control, cross the median, and bounce off the rear side of a FedEx semi. The tanker truck then continued across the southbound lanes and hit a guardrail on the west side of the interstate before coming to a stop. Firefighters had to force the door of the cab open on the tanker truck to get the driver out. He was then airlifted from the scene. The driver of the FedEx truck refused treatment. The impact of the crash caused his truck to split open and some of his cargo spilled onto the interstate. The tanker, however did not spill any of its contents.
