Fort Madison, IA- The Lee County Narcotics Task Force has reported the arrest of a Fort Madison man and woman on felony and misdemeanor drug charges. 54-year-old Jerry Beames and 38-year-old Sherri Beames, both of Fort Madison, were both arrested Thursday, June 30th, in the 1700 block of 35th street in Fort Madison.

Cardinal Stritch will not field an 11-man football team this fall. According to Stritch athletics director Dick Cromwell, the Catholic high school in Oregon does not have the number of players necessary to participate in the 11-man game this season.

FT. MADISON, Iowa (KHQA) — A man and woman from Fort Madison are facing drug related charges and a child endangerment charge. Jerry Beames, 54, and Sherri Beames, 38, were arrested on Thursday in the 1700 block of 35th St. in Fort Madison following the execution of a search warrant at the home by the Lee County Narcotics Task Force.

FT. MADISON, Iowa (KHQA) — An inmate at the Iowa State Penitentiary has died. Elvin Gilroy was pronounced dead due to natural causes at 9:40 a.m. on Monday, June 27 while in hospice at the penitentiary in Fort Madison where he had been housed as a result of chronic illness.

It was a couple rebound victories on Thursday for the Washington softball team when they snapped a four game losing skid to sweep Keokuk for the second time this year. The middle innings of game one was kind to the Demon offense and they rolled to a 10-4 win. They finished with 10 hits led by a 3-for-4 performance from Leighton Salazar and the eighth grader also brought in three runs. Bella Salazar recorded a home run, collected two hits, and managed four RBI. She also tossed a complete game in the circle giving up three earned runs on five knocks and seven strikeouts. Trailing 1-0 in the fourth inning of the nightcap, Washington scored three times in each of the next three frames to capture a 9-3 win. The team added 11 hits with RyLee Fishback going 3-for-4 and four RBI while crossing the plate twice. Halle Cuddeback twirled all seven frames giving up one earned tally on four hits and striking out five.

DES MOINES — Iowa Utilities Board has scheduled another 13 public information meetings about a proposed carbon pipeline through Iowa. The meetings are to discuss Navigator’s proposal to build and operate a large-scale pipeline system that will capture and transport liquefied carbon dioxide from local facilities spanning about 1,300 miles across five Midwest states, including Iowa.

Applications are currently being accepted for a leadership program in Fairfield. According to the Fairfield Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Fairfield is in its eighth year and is the premier networking and professional development program in the area. The program includes eight monthly sessions each centered around a specific theme. Classes meet monthly from September to April. One day every month, the class meets for a day-long session to learn about the community and develop leadership skills. While there is some classroom time, much of the time is spent in the community taking tours, visiting businesses and non-profits, and doing hands-on activities.

Senator Chuck Grassley met with business owners and employees yesterday at Airport Road Winery and Vineyard in Mt. Pleasant for a Town Hall and was asked about various issues. Grassley pledged his support for the Next Generation Fuels Act, which seeks to promote low-carbon, high-octane fuels, protect public health, and improve vehicle efficiency and performance. When asked how the legal immigration process could be sped up to help fill the need for agriculture workers, Grassley said that an abundance of bureaucracy is slowing down the process. The final regular season contest of the year for the Hillcrest Academy Raven baseball team had more twists and turns than the entire schedule leading up to it, with the Ravens scoring a 15-12 walk-off win over Danville. Luke Schrock piled up three early RBI with Jace Rempel, Seth Ours, and Noah Miller all driving in one as Hillcrest used timely hitting to capitalize on 14 free batters awarded by Bears through walks, errors and hit batters.
