MGYSGT Joseph “Joe” Michael Pires USMC (RET), 47, of Havelock, passed away on Wednesday, June 29, 2022 at Vidant Medical Center of Greenville. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, July 5, 2022 at Bridgeway Church of Beaufort. Burial will follow with Military Honors at Carteret Memorial Gardens in Beaufort. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00 at the church on Tuesday.

'We were in shock': Onslow couple wins big from lottery scratch-off ticket

An Onslow County couple won big this week from a scratch-off lottery ticket. John Kopp and Tamara Burnette of Jacksonville bought a $5 Cash Payout ticket from the Publix on Marlin Drive in Jacksonville, and won $200,000, according to a news release from the North Carolina Education Lottery Thursday morning. Burnette said she started scratching the ticket in the parking lot but misread it at first.

Kennie Jones of New Bern purchased a $3 Power Play ticket, matching his numbers on four white balls and the Powerball in Saturday’s drawing to win $50,000.
