Judi Karon Beadles

Mrs. Judi Karon Beadles of Cherry Hill, Arkansas, moved to her heavenly home, June 17, 2022. She was born March 5, 1949, to Ottis and Geraldine Egger. Judi was a member of Cherry Hill Gospel Church; her favorite color was blue. She loved to have a garden with many flowers and vegetables. After graduation, Judi worked at the Polk County Court House, she also taught Sunday school at the Church of Nazarene for several years, later she became a beautician. She owned her shop in Mena called Hair Fantasy. Her service was cuts and styles for everyone. Judi moved to Utah and worked at a dispatch trucking company, that is where Judi met Kenny, they moved back to Mena and Judi worked at Wal-Mart. One of Judi’s favorite songs was “If it wasn’t for the light house”.

Debra Lynn Sexton

Mrs. Debra Lynn Sexton, age 65, passed away Sunday, June 19, 2022, in Mena, Arkansas. She was born July 7, 1956, in Mena, Arkansas, to the late Preston and Reba Rosson. Debbie was a farmer by profession. She enjoyed gardening, canning, and cooking for others. Deb was an exceptional cook, being known for her wonderful peanut brittle. She had an affinity for animals, especially her horses. Debbie was one of the hardest of workers. She was often found tending to her animals and garden. Debbie was also known to be very attentive to her friends and neighbors, always knowing if one of them were sick or in need, bringing eggs, plants, food or whatever she felt was necessary. She was a very loving and giving person and will be greatly missed by so many.

WAPDD Town Hall discusses outdoor options, including pool and splash pad

The Western Arkansas Planning & Development District (WAPDD) came to Mena on May 31 for a Town Hall meeting at City Hall. Tracee McKenna, community development for WAPDD, and Michael Rosenberg, marketing and communications for WAPDD, were on hand to discuss possibilities for projects and improvements for Mena’s outdoor activities for a 50/50 matching grant that relates to outdoor activities.

City of Dierks passes new code enforcement ordinance

The city of Dierks has adopted a new ordinance designed to help clean up the town. At Monday’s city council meeting, aldermen voted six to nothing in favor of passing the multi-page ordinance. Officials say there’s an increasing number of residences in town that are becoming unsightly. Police Chief John McKee presented the ordinance for consideration by aldermen & will be responsible for enforcement. Police will make contact with property owners who are deemed to be in violation of the ordinance & ask them to work on cleaning up their property. If sufficient progress isn’t made on the clean up, Dierks residents will become subject to a fine ranging between two hundred and one thousand dollars.

Nance Receives US Naval Academy Appointment

Abigail Nance has received and accepted an offer of appointment to the United States Naval Academy with highest recommendations and nominations from the offices of: Senator Tom Cotton, Senator John Boozman and Congressman Bruce Westerman. The value of her education and service in the US Naval Academy is invaluable with tuition, fees, health and dental care, room and board, and stipends. Nance plans to pursue a career in aerospace engineering.

Dierks Board members draw for terms and elect new board president

Last week, during the first regular meeting of the newly elected school board of the Dierks School District re-organized by electing Jaron Tipton board president, Jeffrey Mounts vice-president and Kara Tedford secretary. Board members drew names out of a hat to determine the length of the board member terms. Justin Simmons of Zone 1 drew the 5-year term. His term will expire 2026-2027. Mounts of Zone 2 drew the 1-year term, and his term will expire 2022-2023. Laykon Graham of Zone 3 drew the 4-year term and it will expire 2025-2026. Tipton of Zone 4 drew a 3-year term and it will expire 2024-2025. And Tedford of Zone 5 drew a 2-year term and it will expire 2023-2024.

Dierks PD getting a new truck

The Dierks Police Department is getting a new vehicle. Police Chief John McKee told the city council Monday that he has a chance to purchase a 2022 Chevrolet truck with four wheel drive capabilities. McKee said the last vehicle purchased by the department was in 2016. The truck would replace a pickup that’s currently being driven by the chief. He said his current truck has 120,000 miles and needs an engine replacement. Council members approved McKee’s request of the new truck purchase, with a cost of $43,859 dollars from the York Gary Autoplex in Nashville.
