BAXTER SPRINGS, Kans. — A months-long investigation into a drug distribution and possession operation in Baxter Springs resulted in four arrests Thursday. Early in the afternoon on June 30th, Baxter Springs Police and deputies with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office served a search warrant at 2400 Lincoln Ave., according to a Facebook post by BSPD.

Miami Man pleads guilty to multiple drug and firearms violations

A man arrested three times since 2019 for methamphetamine and firearms violations pleaded guilty Monday in federal court, announced U.S. Attorney Clint Johnson. 50-year-old Richard Alan Stewart of Miami pleaded guilty to three counts of Felon in Possession of Firearms and Ammunition; three counts of Possession of Methamphetamine with Intent to Distribute; Carrying a Firearm During and in Relation to a Drug Trafficking Crime; Carrying, Using, and Brandishing a Firearm During and in Relation to a Drug Trafficking Crime; and Possession of a Firearm in Furtherance of a Drug Trafficking Crime.

Rising COVID cases are forcing Kansas to move inmates between prisons

TOPEKA, Kan. — COVID cases are spiking so much in a Kansas prison that inmates are being transferred to other facilities. Corrections records confirmed 55 positive cases at the El Dorado men’s prison as of June 26, according to the Kansas Department of Corrections. El Dorado has a minimum and medium unit in Oswego, and the corrections department said people from Oswego were being transferred. There are 14 positive cases among staff.

Lavene Rayma Redden, 71, of Riverton, died Tuesday, June 28, 2022 at her home.
