Penn State Dubois basketball signs two Meyersdale seniors

Meyersdale seniors Briar Sheets and Sam Hughes were two of the top players on the Red Raiders’ boys basketball team this past winter. The pair, who have been best friends since they were young, have enjoyed the past four years they’ve shared on the court, and will now have the opportunity to continue playing together.

PSC's Yanosky named All-American Third Team

KEYSER - Potomac State College freshman point guard Alexis Yanosky has been named to the NJCAA Division II Women’s Basketball All-American 3rd Team. The Berlin, Pennsylvania, native had an outstanding first year playing and starting all nine games for the Catamounts. Yanosky had a total of 159 points this season averaging 17.7 points per game. She also added 26 steals and 30 assists during the season.

KINGWOOD — Two Preston girls basketball players earned all-Big 10 honors with the release of conference’s first and second teams earlier this week. Senior Michelle Thomas capped off a stellar campaign by being named a first-team all-Big 10 selection. She was a double-double threat nearly every game and also became Preston’s all-time leader in career rebounds when she snagged 16 in the regular-season finale. She finished with 646 career boards.

Ralph Franklin Watts, of Hershey, formerly of Somerset

Ralph Franklin Watts, of Hershey, formerly of Somerset, passed on Feb. 2, 2021, at the age of 94. He was born on Dec. 1, 1926, in State College. Ralph is the son of Curtis and Juanita Watts of Spring Mills. Ralph graduated in 1945 from the Gregg Township Vocational School (GTVS) in Spring Mills where he served as captain of the 1944 GTVS basketball team. It was the only team in the history of the school to win the District Six Class B Pennsylvania State Championship. Ralph enlisted and served in the 9th U.S. Army Air Force in Europe during World War II. Following the war, he played first chair trumpet for the 691st Army Air Force Band. This band was a great joy for him. Ralph was a true musician at heart. He was awarded The Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal, European Theatre of War Medal, Army of Occupation Medal, and The Military Musicians Medal. In 1950, Ralph graduated from The Pennsylvania State University with a degree in Dairy Husbandry. He enjoyed a long career in dairy manufacturing with: Dairymen’s League, Sealtest Southern Dairies, Berkey Milk Company, Hershey Estates Dairy, and Harrisburg Dairies. He married Florabell (Terry) Burgess on Sept. 25, 1948. Ralph’s top priority was always his family, friends and neighbors. He was member of The Elklands Friends Meeting in Sullivan County. Ralph is survived by his wife, Florabell (Terry) Watts; son Ralph Curtis Watts and wife Beverley of Middletown; daughter Virginia Ann Pina and husband Kenneth of Wayne; grandson Robert Curtis Pina; granddaughter Olivia Grace Pina; sister Nancy Vogt of Center Hall; and many nieces and nephews. Son Mark William Watts is deceased. Arrangements are private.
