On Monday, June 21 at about 6 p.m., a Barton County Sheriff’s Office deputy stopped a vehicle at milepost 114 on US 281 Highway, just south of the city of Hoisington. The vehicle was stopped for a traffic infraction. During the course the investigation, the deputy became suspicious the driver was under the influence of drugs. A K9 officer was called to the scene and indicated the presence of controlled substances in the vehicle.

As farmers tend to their crops this season, Nationwide, the country’s no. 1 insurer of farms and ranches1, is taking steps to help prevent grain entrapment deaths in rural America. In partnership with the National Education Center for Agricultural Safety (NECAS), Nationwide is awarding 48 fire departments across the country with life-saving grain rescue tubes and hands-on training to prepare them to respond when entrapments occur. The Larned Fire Department was included to receive the tubes and training.

Probably the name most remembered as a nurse during the Civil War is that of Clara Barton. Her fame resulted in many locations and structures being named after her. Barton County, Kansas, is named after Clara Barton, although she had no specific connection with Kansas. However, many Civil War Veterans homesteaded in Kansas, and it may have been such a soldier who suggested her name for the county.

GREAT BEND – A Great Bend truck driver was injured Monday when his cement truck overturned near the city limits, blocking a railroad track for more than an hour. Barton County Sheriff’s deputies responded at about 2:25 p.m. to Railroad Avenue at Washington Street, on the Great Bend’s southern city limits, according to a release from Sheriff Brian Bellendir.

The City of Great Bend has storm boxes and lines in town that are collapsed and in need of repair. The project to repair the storm boxes was put out to bid on May 7 but no bids were received. Public Works Director Jason Cauley contacted Concrete Services and Eakin Enterprises. Concrete Services replied with the only bid to repair the storm boxes at 4200 Broadway, 23rd & McKinley, 12th & McKinley and 28th & Jefferson.

GBFD responded to a report of a burning plastic smell coming from a backyard at 18th and Heizer at 5:45 p.m. Monday. Upon arrival, crews found an unattended residential fire pit with burning household products. They located the occupants of the house and advised them the burn pit was illegal. GREAT BEND, Kan. (KWCH) - The driver of a cement truck suffered critical injuries in a Monday afternoon crash in Great Bend. The Barton County Sheriff’s Office said the driver failed to negotiate a curve and the truck overturned on railroad tracks. The sheriff’s office said there was no immediate evidence of damage to the tracks, but K&O (Kansas and Oklahoma) Railroad would inspect them.
