Gerald “Jerry” Benjamin, age 88 of Jackson, Minnesota passed away on Wednesday, June 29, 2022, in Spirit Lake, Iowa. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 3, 2022, at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Jackson, with Pastor John Schuetz officiating. Burial will be following the service at Riverside Cemetery in Jackson, with Military Honors performed by Jackson American Legion Post #130.

Gail Janet Henry, 76

Gail Janet Henry, daughter of Roland Alexander and Betty Cordelia (Blackenburg) Koster, was born on Monday, July 23, 1945, in Lakefield, Minnesota. Gail was one out of 10 children in the family. She was baptized at the Rost Lutheran Church and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Gail attended and graduated from Lakefield High School in 1963. Upon graduation, Gail was united in marriage to Lonnie Henry, and the couple moved to Saint Louis, Missouri. They were blessed with 3 children Lance, Robin, and Lee. Gail moved to Edwardsville, Illinois where she attended Southern Illinois University, earning her degree in Psychology. She relocated to Arlington, Texas. Gail was employed at Texas Workforce Commission, where she helped individuals secure employment. After Gail retired, she remained living in Arlington, Texas, where she passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 4, 2021, at the age of 76 years, 4 months, and 11 days.

Post 130 beats another top team

On Monday, the Jackson American Legion Post 130 baseball team beat Windom, which won the Big South Conference championship this spring. On Thursday, Post 130 did even better, topping Fairmont, the team that just won the Class AA state title, 11-9. Jackson led 7-1 going to the bottom of the fifth, then Fairmont scored four runs to get back in it. Jackson answered with four runs in the seventh, then held on when Fairmont plated four of its own in the bottom half.

Watch: Fox snake feasts on bird egg at Jeffers Petroglyphs

Jeffers Petroglyphs recently hosted a reptile with a robust appetite. The historical site, a rocky area with more than 5,000 sacred Native American carvings, sits about 15 miles southwest of Springfield. Last week, petroglyphs staff shared a video of a western fox snake feasting on a meal of killdeer eggs.

Mary Ann Hassing, age 76, of Sherburn, formerly of Alpha, Minnesota entered into eternal rest, with her daughter Ann and granddaughters by her side, on Friday, July 1, 2022, at Temperance Lake Ridge in Sherburn. Mary will be laid to rest at Fort Snelling National Cemetery at a later date.

St. James’ ‘Mr. Tennis’ Les Zellmann earns national top coach honor

Zellmann has posted 1,121 victories coaching boys’ and girls’ tennis and brought 16 teams to the state tournament. Les Zellmann never set out to become a tennis coach. Baseball was his sport growing up in Belle Plaine in the early 1970s. When he took his second teaching job in St. James in 1979, he sought a position coaching baseball, but there weren’t any available. So he settled on tennis, a completely new venture for him.
