Valley Queen Cheese will host U.S. Sen. John Thune, R-S.D.; and U.S. Rep. Dusty Johnson, R-S.D. this week in Milbank in celebration of June Dairy Month. Johnson will tour Valley Queen’s processing facility, 200 E. Railway Ave., from noon to 1 p.m. Monday. He will also participate in a producer roundtable and special appreciation event for Valley Queen Cheese employees.

Sunday, June 19, started out as a special day because it was Father’s Day. It turned out to be extra special for Dom Boerger and the Milbank Firechiefs. Boerger threw a no-hitter against the Clark Traders. He recorded 17 strikeouts and walked only one batter in the seven innings he pitched. To help put that in perspective, according to Baseball Almanac, only 316 no-hitters have been thrown in major league games from July 1876 to May 2022.

The First Annual Post 9 Pancake Feed will be held at the Milbank Fire Hall on Sunday, June 26, from 9 a.m. until noon. A free will offering is requested. OWATONNA, Minn. (KEYC) - A Madison Lake couple will host an upcoming golf tournament in honor of a baby they lost. The golf tournament is called Birdies Fore Babies. Kortni and Dustin Pizel created Birdies Fore Babies to honor their daughter, Brynlie, who was unexpectedly born stillborn on July 23, 2021.

The 41st Annual Milbank Invitational was held June 17 -18 at Unity Health and Fitness Center. Adrienne Korth was selected Swimmer of the Meet. Coaches stated, “Adrienne had time improvements and was willing to help in a relay to fill the team. Adrienne also works very hard in practice and with a great attitude.”

Bonita “Bonnie” Tjosaas, 75, of Appleton, Minnesota (formerly of Benson) passed away Monday, June 20, 2022, at the Appleton Area Health Nursing Home in Appleton. Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Sunday, June 26, 2022, at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church in Benson. The funeral service will be held Monday, June 27, 2022, at 2:00 p.m., at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church. Interment will be at a later date at the Six Mile Grove Cemetery in rural Benson.

Eighty years ago, the Tony Nigg family received official word that their son, Navy Seaman Second Class Laverne “Budd” A. Nigg was missing in action, and later that he was presumed dead. On Saturday, June 4, 2022, he was buried at Calvary Cemetery in Browns Valley, MN with full military honors.

The Milbank Junior Teeners played Saturday, June 18, in a round robin tournament at Pribyl Park. The 14U bracket also included Webster, Groton, and Britton. Milbank defeated Webster 10-2, fell to Groton 5-2, and defeated Britton 7-4 to end the tournament 2-1. In game one against Webster, Milbank got their offense going in the top of the second. Representative Dusty Johnson is slated to honor local Vietnam veterans during a ceremony on Monday, June 27, in Milbank. The public is welcome to attend the event at 1:30 p.m. on the north side of the Grant County Courthouse. During the ceremony, Johnson will thank the veterans for their service and present each nominated veteran with a commemorative pin.

Kevin Schuelke, head of Grant County Management, says Milbank got hit harder than some of the other areas in the county that also experienced severe thunderstorms on Monday night, June 20. The storm caused power outages around the area, and at least 500 customers in the Milbank area lost service.
