First State Bank wins over Cozad Reds

Cozad- In a matchup of two winless teams, First State Bank of Holdrege got the best of Cozad as they downed the Reds on Tuesday night 16-5. Holdrege jumped out early with four runs in the top of the first and cruised in for the win. They would score in every inning adding one run in the 2nd, three in the third and fourth innings and five in the fifth. Cozad managed to scored three in the fourth. Tate Florell picked up the win for First State Bank as he threw 3 1/3 innings and gave up four hits, and allowed four runs and struck out five. Kaeden Broeker finished up the game on the mound for Holdrege who improved to 1-5 on the season. At the plate, Carlos DeRivera led the way as he drove in four runs with a couple of hits. Florell along with being the winning pitcher also had three hits. Cozad was led at the plate by Nate Engel who went three for three with an RBI. The Reds dropped to 0-6 on the season and will play tonight at Gothenburg. Holdrege also won the juniors game 16-2. Click here to listen to podcast.

Broken Bow American Legion Juniors and Seniors Pick Up Wins Against Cozad

The Broken Bow American Legion juniors and seniors baseball teams traveled to Cozad for a doubleheader Tuesday night. The Bow juniors offense carried them to their 7th win of the season. It was an active first inning as Broken Bow scored 5 runs in the first and Cozad responded with 4. Bow would score more, Cozad would not. Broken Bow scored 8 runs in the second and 8 more in the third to end the game in three innings by a final of 21-4. Eli Coble helped lead the Bow attack going 3 for 4 with 4 runs scored and 2 runs batted in. Max Denson finished 2 for 3 with 3 runs scored and 1 RBI. Jacob Heapy was 1 for 1 driving in three. The Bow juniors are still undefeated improving to 7-0.

Cozad high school has announced new head coaching hires for its girls and boys golf programs. For the girls, Bryce Bivins replaces Kaylei Becker who has stepped down from the position. Prior to coming to Cozad, Bivins was the head boys basketball coach in Haxtun, Colorado for one year. He also competed in golf at the collegiate level for Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colorado. Bivins is currently an assistant coach for both the high school boys basketball team and boys golf team at Cozad.
