The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency recently that Army Cpl. Donald L. Menken, 21, of Whitesburg, killed during the Korean War, was accounted for Feb. 2, 2022. In June 1953, Menken was a member of Company K, 3rd Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division. He was reported missing in action after being wounded by artillery shell fragments on June 10 while his unit was guarding Outpost Harry, a position on the main road to Seoul in what is now the Demilitarized Zone. He was never found, nor were any remains recovered that could be identified as Menken. He was declared killed in action on June 11, 1954, and non-recoverable in January 1956.
