Nonprofit gives injured Norton chief $10K, honors slain officers

NORTON — As Norton Police Chief James Lane continues his recuperation, organizations and the public keep remembering what happened to him just over a year ago. Lane received his latest recognition Saturday from the nonprofit organization Running 4 Heroes. Its founder, 13-year-old Zechariah Cartledge, presented Lane with a $10,000 check to help with expenses as the chief continues his recovery from his May 2021 line-of-duty shooting.

Norton Police Chief set to receive injured first responders grant

NORTON, Va. — It was nearly one year ago that 13-year-old Zechariah Cartledge came to Southwest Virginia. The Florida teen ran a mile in honor of a fallen first responder, and also presented a $10,000 grant to Coeburn Police Officer Robert Potter, who was injured in the line of duty.

38 people indicted on drug charges in Dickenson Co.

VanDyke, Canter showing early dominance at Kingsport Speedway

KINGSPORT — Kres VanDyke and Kevin Canter are proving once again to be the men to beat at Kingsport Speedway. VanDyke, a three-time Late Model Stock track champion, has a six-race winning streak on the three-eighths-mile concrete oval. The Abingdon driver also set fast time in qualifying Friday before the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series program was rained out. Man killed in Washington County, Virginia crash, police say

WASHINGTON COUNTY, Va. (WCYB) — A Saltville man was killed in a crash which occurred in Washington County on June 24, according to Virginia State Police. Police responded to a single-vehicle crash on Route 740 just north of Route 750 at 9:24 p.m. Police said a 1990 Ford F350 driven by 41-year-old Jason W. Blevins was going south on Route 740 when it ran off the right side of the road, overcorrected, crossed the double yellow line, went off the left side of the road, hit an embankment and a tree, overturned and came to rest back in the road.

Man Arrested After Running From Police At Roadblock

A southwestern Virginia man is now behind bars on a long list of charges after allegedly leading police on a chase. A roadblock was being conducted at the intersection of US 460 and Marrowbone Creek at around 11:00 PM Friday night. Officers checked on 26-year-old James Douglas Allen Adkins, of Vansant, who was said to be in a side-by-side. Officers allegedly smelled alcohol as they approached Adkins’ vehicle, who then drove away.
