The Portola Concerts in the Park are set to return starting Friday, July 8 at 7 p.m., with the first of seven concerts to be the popular Margret’s Funk Band, playing Motown, old favorites and considered ‘great to dance to’ as well. “They were one of our favorites and actually got to perform last year, and didn’t get cancelled from smoke, threat of fire, or Covid,” said organizers.

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - Truckee Meadows Fire and Rescue knocked down a brush fire in Cold Springs. It happened around 10 p.m. on Sunday, June 26, near Mud Springs Road. Firefighters were able to keep it to just over an acre. There were no reported injuries or damage to any structures.

The June Ace of Aces Qualifier was played on a warm Thursday, June 23, with 19 players competing. The low gross and low net winners to qualify over the field compete in the end-of-season Ace of Aces Playoff in October. A player needs to qualify only once each season. The Plumas County Sheriff’s Office has issued a save the date for Saturday, Aug. 27, for what is planned to be the first annual Plumas County Law Enforcement Fair. Inspired by the Modoc County Sheriff’s Office, the Plumas County Sheriff’s Office is teaming up with the California Highway Patrol, Fish and Wildlife, the Forest Service, OES and the Sierra County Sheriff’s Office. This is an event designed for the entire family, with food served up by law enforcement.

SPARKS, Nev. (News 4 & Fox 11) — A woman is in custody after two crashes Thursday morning, one in the Verdi area and the second in Sparks. The first crash, a hit -and-run crash, occurred around 6:30 a.m. on June 23 on eastbound I-80 near mile marker 4 in the Verdi area. The driver of the suspect vehicle left the scene.

The Plumas Unified School District board of trustees honored 19 retirees during its June 22 board meeting, though none were able to attend in person. That didn’t stop their supervisors from lauding them for their service. Portola High School Principal Sara Sheridan began the accolades, acknowledging four individuals. She opened with Robin Adrian-Murray who was retiring after 26 years. Adrian-Murray began her career serving meals to the students in the cafeteria and also taught in the culinary program and the garden. “Her chocolate chip cookies are the stuff of legends,” Sheridan said.

The Sierra County Historical Society sponsored a workshop led by Cemetery Conservator Jonathan Appell and Dean Fischer the Downieville Cemetery District Trustee for local volunteers interested in maintaining our Downieville Cemetary’s gravesites, Tombstones and Stone markers. St. Thomas Catholic Church in Sierra City has a new cross atop its steeple. While working on the historic building in 2020, Rudy Rodriguez of Alpine Painting noticed the original wooden cross had deteriorated to the point that was in danger of crashing to the ground. He removed it, and the parishioners of Immaculate Conception Parish launched a campaign to fund a new cross. Encouraged by generous donors including Father Borlaug, a visiting priest with a special affection for the building, church members raised the money and initiated the project. They contacted Ace Welding in Grass Valley who created an aluminum replica of the original, and powder coated it to resemble wood. On Monday, June 13 the cross was raised to its lofty position, some forty feet above the ground, by contractor Bob Eiermann and his crew.

A tragic accident in Downieville last night resulted in the lost of a treasured community member, Shaun Price. Shaun was a valued AEMT and Firefighter with Downieville VFD and Ambulance, a Downieville Lion’s Club member and served on the Sierra Frontier Medical Resources Board. Another local community member Miles Ryan was injured in the same accident, thankfully Miles is expected to recover.

The next regularly scheduled Fire Safe Sierra County meeting is Thursday, June 30, 2022 at 6pm at the Sierraville School. This meeting will focus on the Resident and Agency survey results, and the Draft Program of Work. The Program of Work will identify wildfire mitigation projects, outreach, and education needs within the county.
