What is PFAS?

PFAS, are synthetic man-made chemicals that have been used since the 1950's. They are otherwise known as "forever chemicals" because they do not breakdown, so stay in the environment and can build up in the bodies of humans and animals and even in plants (1). The most well-known PFAS is probably Teflon. Yep, the OG nonstick coating, otherwise known as PTFE. Most likely you've heard of how when Teflon starts to peel off or chip from our pans it can be bad, but this is just one of thousands of PFAS chemicals.

Every can still needs a thin liner inside so that the food doesn’t corrode the metal from the inside out. So if they are not made with BPA, what are these new liners made of? Eating Healthy is More than Just Healthy Ingredients!. Healthy eating should be about more than just healthy ingredients! While there are many different specific diets, most definitions of healthy eating involve choosing fresh, nutrient-dense whole foods that provide maximal nutritional benefits. Refined grains, sugar, vegetable oils, and other unhealthy ingredients are left off the plate. But if healthy ingredients become contaminated with harmful chemicals, are they really healthy? It is time for healthy eating to incorporate more than just ingredients. Healthy eating should also include how the food is packaged and what materials the food comes into contact with while it is being processed, cooked, and stored.

Snow Jackets with PFC-Free DWR

Stay warm and dry on the slopes without the harmful chemicals. A lot of weather-proof jackets contain harmful forever chemicals otherwise known as PFC or PFAS. That's why we found the best winter and ski jackets that are waterproof with PFC-free Durable Water Repellent (DWR) for your next trip to the mountains! DWR is a coating added to fabrics to make them water-resistant. The traditional DWR treatments were made of PFAS chemicals that wear off over time, leaving these chemicals to pollute the great outdoors and wherever else you are. In fact most jackets will say that they need re-treatment at some point in their life. That's why we are so excited that the outdoor industry has started to use DWR without PFAS chemicals. Usually you will see them labeled as PFC-free DWR. A couple of years ago, there were almost no jackets without PFCs, so we are happy to have found so many PFC-free DWR jackets. These jackets will keep you nice and warm without these pesky forever chemicals coatings slowly wearing off.

While tea bags are great (and basically everywhere) there's something you should know about that innocent tea bag. Many of them use plastic to keep them sealed shut. Nope, not just on the wrapper the tea bag actually comes in, but the bag itself. The idea of a plastic soaking in boiling hot water just does not sound cozy to us. PFC and PVC Free Kids Rain Boots

Puddles don't stand a chance against these wellies!. Spring is right around the corner, which means so is the rain! If you have kids, chances are you need to stock up on some new rain boots (how do kids grow so quickly?!). But a lot of rain boots you'd find in stores often are made with harmful chemicals like PVC and PFC. PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) is a common plastic that is used in hundreds of places, but it's often used in rain gear to make it more waterproof. PVC on its own is not inherently toxic but it is extremely brittle, which is why phthalates are often added to make it stronger. Phthalates are harmful endocrine disruptors that have been linked to cancer, infertility, heart disease, and obesity.

What’s a Rain Garden and How Do I Build One?

A guide to how rain gardens reduce water pollution and how to build one. What's a rain garden? Well, we're glad you asked! Rain gardens are not very well known but they are becoming more and more popular for their ability to reduce water pollution. The basic premise of a rain garden is that a basin filled with native plants captures water as it flows through your yard and filters out pollutants through the soil and plant roots before reentering the groundwater. Rain gardens are incredible, not only for being a great way to clean our water runoff, but they are aesthetically beautiful and create habitats for so much wildlife!
