DeEsta (Dee) Wellborn

“Grandma Down At Grant” DeEsta was born in Idaho Falls, Idaho, and moved to Shoup, Idaho in 1940. She spent her childhood on the banks of the Salmon River with her siblings Bob, Judy Ann, and Karen. They would ride the cable trolley across the river every day to go to school.

Teen arrested on rape, weapons assault charges

An 18-year-old Dillon man was arrested last week on felony charges alleging he raped an underage girl and “marked” her as his with a weapon. Blaine Burger appeared in Beaverhead County Justice Court Tuesday morning. He is charged with felony counts of aggravated assault, assault with a weapon, sexual abuse of children, and sexual intercourse without consent. He faces up to 100 years to life in prison and up to $50,000 in fines on the most serious charge. Youths under age 16 cannot.

One local contested race in Primary Election

Beaverhead County’s only contested race in the upcoming Primary Election on June 7 will be for the position of County Superintendent of Public Schools. The race is on the Republican ballot between incumbent Robert “Mike” Miller and challenger Michelle Nelon. Nelon currently works at the Montana Youth ChaNGe Academy.

On the evening of May 4th the Beaverhead Search and Rescue held it monthly meeting. It was called to order at 7:05 by commander Lawrence Morriroe. Minutes of the last meeting were read and approved with no additions or deletions. Brian Vinson, co-treasurer, gave his report on the financial situation of the unit. Guest and new probationary members were introduced. New probationary members include James Matthews, Daniel Wyatt, and Rhiannon Kalsta. Probationary members serve for one year as members without voting rights. At the end of the year they are reviewed based on their participation and either become full members or be gone. At the present time we have 58 active members of our allotted 60 members.

District Court

May 3 • Jacob Christian Schmidt of Dillon was sentenced on misdemeanor Driving Under the Influence – 1st offense in Fifth Judicial District Court. Judge Luke Berger sentenced him to 10 days in the Beaverhead County Jail, all suspended, $600 fine, court fees, probation conditions.
