Sprinklers stop kitchen fire in Port Royal apartment

The City of Beaufort/Town of Port Royal Fire Department responded to a kitchen fire at Laurel Hill Apartments in Port Royal just before 7 p.m., Monday, May 23. The closest engine to Laurel Hill Apartments was operating at BPRFD’s third water emergency in three days behind the Naval Hospital, working to pull an occupant out of the water. The next closest engine responded and was on scene in less than four minutes and reported light smoke showing from a three-story, multi-family dwelling.

Ridgeland man sentenced to 25 years for drug trafficking

A Ridgeland man was sentenced to 25 years in prison last week after he pleaded guilty to trafficking narcotics, the 14th Circuit Solicitor’s Office said. Christopher Ray Smith, 43, had been charged with two counts of trafficking heroin, trafficking methamphetamine, trafficking cocaine, three counts of possession with intent to distribute oxycodone, two counts of possession within intent to distribute amphetamine, two counts of possession with intent to distribute buprenorphine, and possession with intent to distribute alprazolam.

Lowcountry man accused of taking 12-year-old Arizona girl to S.C. home indicted in federal court

BEAUFORT COUNTY, S.C. (WCSC) - A Beaufort County man who is accused of taking a 12-year-old girl from Arizona to his home in South Carolina has been indicted in federal court. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Arizona said a grand jury indicted 24-year-old Timothy Mikell Schultheis on transportation of a minor with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity and travel with intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct.

Beaufort County conducts traffic study on US 278 in Okatie

Beaufort County said it is studying a three-mile section of U.S. 278 in Okatie as it works to address “increased congestion and safety concerns.”.
