Oyster Fest's Rocky Return

An hour into the Arcata Bay Oyster Festival, the lines for oysters at the Obento stall stretched across the battered grass and under the red and blue striped tent where local food businesses were tabling. The shade was a relief on a sunny day that promised traditional Oyster Fest sunburns, but those in the queue were in for a test of patience and the charm of their company, since those at the front of the line reported waiting 45 minutes or more to place orders.

Humboldt County agrees to freeze hiring for 3 months

HUMBOLDT, Calif. — Tuesday night, the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors discussed the state of the county's finances and agreed to freeze county hiring for three months. The freeze will be for non-critical positions, according to county supervisors. County officials said they would rather have a hiring freeze than have to lay off employees in the future, especially since many agencies are already suffering from staffing shortages. The social services call center in Eureka, for example, is currently at 41% staffing.

OBITUARY: Ike Randle, 1935-2022

Dwight Marion (Ike) Randle was born on June 26, 1935 in Eureka, CA to Dorothy Frost Randle and Clyde Randle and spent his entire life living in Eureka. While Dwight was his given name, he always MUCH preferred (as anyone will tell you) to be called “Ike.” Ike’s father died unexpectedly at the age of 45 in 1942, after which his mother married Weldon Randle, Clyde’s brother and the family bought a piece of land (after “always renting” – according to Dorothy) on Pine Hill where Ike and his sister, Sidney, grew up. According to his mother, even from an early age, Ike loved to “fix things – somehow all his toys broke and needed to be taken apart and fixed.” He would carry this love of fixing things into his career as a “body and fender repairman.” He was also an inventor – one of the favorite stories about his childhood was that when he was in junior high he fashioned a bicycle with a steering wheel and thinking this was a good idea, went down a hill near his home, only to lose control and break his arm.

RE: RE: RE: Unhinged

First, I have to acknowledge Gordon Inkles as the fine writer that he is (Mailbox, June 23). But he says he missed my alternative to foul language in political debate. My letter listed five good examples of the alternative. Google Hakeem Jeffries or Chris Murphy on gun control, or Taiara Tamminga on biased policing, or Katie Porter on political corruption, or Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on just about anything.
