JESUP, Ga. — The Wayne County Sheriff's Office and Georgia State Patrol are searching for the driver who hit a man on a bike, then left him for dead. The victim, Brandon Rhett Barber, was on a bike ride with his wife and 2-year-old daughter on Northview Drive in Jesup on Friday when he was hit.

Mr. Danny Mac Thompson, age 79, of Alston, died Saturday, June 25, 2022, at his home following a lengthy illness. Born January 11, 1943, in Alston to the late Dan Thompson and Faye McDaniel Thompson, he made Alston his home all of his life. He was a graduate of Montgomery County High School and served in the Army National Guard Reserve. Earlier in his life, he worked with Federal Pacific in Vidalia, and later retired after thirty-three years from the Georgia Department of Correctional Industries. He was a member of the Alston United Methodist Church and South Georgia Beagle Club in Wheeler County. Mr. Thompson raised Beagles, Blue Healers, and he loved horses and enjoyed hunting. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Judy Roberson Thompson; son, Jon Charles “Chuck” Thompson; sister, Patsy Thompson Rusilko; maternal grandparents, Eudell Morris McDaniel and Murdock McDaniel; and mother-in-law and father-in-law, Edwin and Jean Roberson.

Mrs. Jodonne Marcum Reese, 84, entered into rest on Wednesday, June 22, 2022. Mrs. Reese was born in Lyons, Georgia to the late John Henry and Donnie Mae Kight Marcum. She retired from Oxford of Lyons as a supervisor with eighteen years of service. Jodonne was a dedicated member of Bath First Baptist Church and a former director of their preschool department.

Jason Rushing, age 45, of Surrency died Tuesday, June 21, 2022 at Memorial Health Meadows in Vidalia. Jason was born January 12, 1977 in Appling County. He was a certified welder and mechanic and a boiler maker with Local 26 of Savannah. Jason was preceded in death by his brother, Shane Atkinson; grandparents, Esther & Roger Rushing and Cleoman Connell; and his best friend, Jamie Thomas.

Nobles Funeral Home and Crematory announces the funeral service of Kenneth Jeffrey Tanner, age 55, who passed away Friday, June 17, 2022, at his residence. Jeff was a native of Appling County, living thirteen years in Lexington, South Carolina. He was the owner of Tanner Piano and a piano technician for the University of South Carolina. Jeff relocated his business, Tanner Piano, to Baxley in 2011 and serviced pianos all-over Southeast Georgia and South Carolina. Jeff was a graduate of the University of Georgia where he received his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and was a piano tuner for the University of Georgia.

William Donald “Don” Blocker Sr. Screven—William Donald “Don” Blocker Sr., 91, of Screven died June 18, 2022. The Wayne County native and U.S. Army veteran was a member of Screven First Baptist Church. He graduated in 1948 from Screven High School, and at the age of 18, he went to serve his country in the Korean War. When he returned home, the G.I. Bill afforded him to attend the University of Georgia and receive a degree in education.

(June 15, 2022) District Attorney (DA) Keith Higgins announces that Kegan B. Bennett, 40, Douglas L. Wooten, 41, and Denver L. Wooten, 19, all from Hazlehurst, pled guilty to Felony Murder in the 2021 death of Marcos Ramirez, 55, also of Hazlehurst. Additionally, Verlyttia Raiford, 33, plead guilty to Armed Robbery, and Denver Wooten pled guilty to the Aggravated Assault of Ramirez’ daughter, Brittany Ramirez, 27. The pleas, which were made pursuant to plea agreements, were accepted in May 2022, in Jeff Davis County Superior Court.
