Homeschooled Bastrop County teen headed to Air Force Academy

A Bastrop County teenager will soon join the ranks of the select few accepted into a U.S. military academy with future plans to serve the country. Lake Mills, an 18-year old who lives near Paige, will report June 24 to the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., fulfilling a dream he’s had since he was 12 years old.

Classical school to open campus in Bastrop

After less than a year of work and organizing, a local charter school advocacy group has recruited a new school to Bastrop County. Last week, Bastrop Charter Advocate Network (CAN) announced that Founders Classical Academy, a tuition-free public charter school system that offers a classical education method, would be opening a campus in Bastrop this fall. Bastrop CAN launched in August 2020 with the goal of recruiting a public charter school to Bastrop County. Since then, the organization has gathered the support of over 300 families. Animal shelter offers specials to clear the kennels

Over the past two weekends, Bastrop County Animal Services (BCAS) has offered adoption specials in order to alleviate their over-capacity shelter and help clear out the kennels. As of May 27, the shelter was beyond capacity with 370 animals. BCAS decided to offer a weekend-long special for adopting dogs, called “Klear the Kennels”: adult dogs could be adopted for $25, and puppies and small dogs could be adopted for $50. County operations return to normal after COVID-19 response

After over a year of responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Bastrop County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) is returning to normal operations, the Bastrop County Office of Emergency Management (OEM) announced last week. May 31, after which the EOC was ended, marks 442 days of the county responding to COVID-19. The EOC was activated on March 16, 2021. Each Tuesday throughout the pandemic, the OEM shared a weekly update on COVID-19 case numbers and the activities undertaken by the county. However, last Tuesday's update will be the last. Drake Best Injured in Commercial Truck Accident on US-290 in Bastrop County, TX

Bastrop County, TX -- December 29, 2020, 18-year-old Drake Best was injured in a collision with a commercial truck on U.S. Highway 290 in Bastrop County. Authorities say the incident happened around 7:00 p.m. at the intersection of US-290 and Roy Davis Road. Preliminary investigation suggests Best was driving a Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck west on the highway approaching the intersection as a Dodge Ram 3500 pickup truck pulling a trailer traveled north on Roy Davis and attempted to cross through the highway lanes. The 3500 pickup reportedly failed to yield and Best's pickup collided with the towed trailer.

Damage in the Red Rock, Rockne and Rosanky area was likely caused by powerful straightline winds of up to 80 miles per hour on Friday evening, May 28. BASTROP COUNTY, Texas — As small towns in a largely rural county, Bastrop and Elgin were known for their cotton farms and peanut crops when World War II began in 1941. Virtually overnight, Bastrop County became one of the most important training camps for the U.S. Army. Construction on Camp Swift began in 1941 on 56,000 acres north of the city of Bastrop where as many as 300,000 soldiers would train there before the war ended.
