Then followed days of visiting ancient castles, including Windsor when the Queen was in residence, abbeys in England and Scotland, and was back in London for the celebration of Queen Elizabeth’s 75-year reign as monarch.

Fire burns 96 acres in Bastrop County

Bastrop domestic violence agency receives grant

The Texas Council on Family Violence (TCFV) awarded $270,000 to 12 domestic violence agencies across Texas, including the Bastrop County Women's Shelter in Bastrop, via the 2022 Swalm Grants, and 100% of the grants fulfilled the recipients’ total requested amounts. The grants – designed to fund operations not usually covered by government grants – will go towards a variety of needs, but TCFV noticed the most common ones revolved around updating technology for staff and managing long waitlists for survivor services such as childcare, counseling and transitional housing.“It’s a privilege for TCFV to provide these grants from our Swalm Endowment Fund ...

Brush fire burns 30 acres near McDade

In the midst of a hot, dry summer, a brush fire on Tuesday, July 26 burned several acres near McDade.First responders, representing the McDade, Elgin and Blue volunteer fire departments, Bastrop County Emergency Services District No. 2, the Texas A&M Forest and Star Flight, worked the Knobbs Fire near McDade on the evening of July 26. An 103-acre fire in Smithville is 80% contained, officials say

A fire in Smithville that has burned over 100 acres is 80% contained, Bastrop County emergency management officials said Monday evening. Bastrop County Emergency Services District No. 2 reported Monday afternoon that its firefighters, along with those from Emergency Services District No. 1, Heart of the Pines Volunteer Fire Dept. and Texas A&M Forest Service, were asked to respond to a large brush fire estimated to be around 50 acres at the time in Smithville’s Hidden Shores area.
