Flatlander Half Marathon to benefit Barton County walk & bike infrastructure

The Flatlander Half Marathon, hosted by Be Well Barton County and supported by major sponsors Advanced Therapy and Sports Medicine and University of Kansas Health Systems, is in its fifth year and is set for Oct. 16 with the half marathon (13.1 miles) starting at 7:30 a.m. and the 5K (3.11 miles) & 10K (6.2 miles) at 8:30 a.m. on Forest Street just west of Jack Kilby Square.

OLD BUSINESS - COMMISSION: Barton County Façade Improvement Grant: -The Façade Improvement Grant program has available funding. The Commissioners will review multiple applications to determine award amounts up to 75% of eligible project costs, with a maximum award of $20,000.00. Awards will be given based on the project’s size and visual impact. The program prioritizes retailers and restaurants and project applications that commit more than the minimum required match amount. Awards were made in the following amounts – AJN Investments, LLC, 1315 Main, Great Bend - $20,000.00; Barnard Tire and Automotive, 202 N Main, Hoisington - $7,238.05; Jerad and Adeline Chansler, 1604 Main, Great Bend - $7,763.37; Loretta K. Miller – two projects, 2019 and 2021 Forest Avenue, Great Bend - $17,449.62 and $5,920.71 respectively; Kent A. Roth, 10 N Main, Ellinwood - $6,663.24; and Two Chicks & Some Old Bird, 106 N Main, Ellinwood - $20,000.00.

Barton drops to 101st in county COVID rankings

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment released the latest COVID-19 statistics on Monday. As of 9 a.m. on Sept. 20, Kansas has had 399,369 cases, resulting in 13,451 hospitalizations and 5,916 statewide deaths. There have been 18 Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C) cases associated with COVID-19. There were 2,462 new cases, 46 new hospitalizations and 51 new deaths reported since Friday, Sept. 17, including three deaths in the Golden Belt.

GB City Council looks at revamping eco devo

Meeting during a work session Monday night, it was the consensus of the Great Bend City Council to amend the Great Bend Economic Development Inc.’s bylaws to expand the GBED Board from five to seven members, and enter into a cooperative economic development effort with Barton County on a one-year trial basis.

County health director stands by quarantine recommendation

A free drive-through COVID-19 vaccination event will take place this Saturday, Sept. 25, at the St. Rose Medical Pavilion parking lot, 3515 Broadway Ave., from 8-11 a.m. The University of Kansas Health System in Great Bend will have first and second doses of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines for those 12 years of age and older. A parent or guardian must accompany children under 18.
