Barton Commission hears about National Recovery Month prior to Friday event

Substance use disorder, or addiction in common parlance, is costly to both individuals and society as a whole. That's why there have been building movements to treat addiction as a medical issue. At Wednesday's Barton County Commission meeting, Central Kansas Community Corrections Director Amy Boxberger and a few other community members presented a proclamation that September is National Recovery Month. One of the events to celebrate the month is Recovery Out Loud, Every Voice Matters Friday night at 6:30 p.m. at Jack Kilby Square.

Mosaic art on display in five locations across Barton County

Barton Arts Movement is proud to announce a new digital mosaic art installation is available for public viewing at five locations in Barton County. The digital mosaic piece was created by Great Bend artist, Yuchen Wang Boswell, who compiled approximately 350 crowd-sourced images to design the artwork. All images used in the digital mosaic were captured in Barton County and submitted to Barton Arts Movement by area residents. You can find the artwork at the following locations through the end of 2022:

Christendon recognized by Barton Co. Commission for hard work

Barton County Commissioner Jon Prescott summed things up well at Wednesday's commission meeting: the courthouse is a first impression for many of the county. And someone has to keep that big building clean. Custodian Pam Christendon with facilities management was recognized by commissioners with the Employee Recognition Award. Administrative Assistant Diana Watson read the nomination and added her own thoughts.

Barton Co. courthouse will need vacated for HVAC overhaul

In July, Barton County Commissioners and other officials met with the architects and engineers for a proposed heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system at the courthouse. The designs have yet to be returned from Orazem & Scalora Engineering (OSE), but a big project is looking even bigger as the courthouse will need to be vacated for several months during the upgrade.

Barton Commission pleased with another facade improvement in Great Bend

If you improve its facade, they will come. Quite literally for an Airbnb rental property in downtown Great Bend. Owner Jared Chansler asked Barton County Commissioners at Wednesday's meeting for additional facade improvement funds for his property at 1604 Main Street. The commission agreed to give Jared and Adeline Chansler 75 percent of the construction overages, or $749.13.

Presentation on Great Bend's modern architecture Sept. 26

Dr. Alfred Willis will give a presentation on modern architecture Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. at the Barton County Historical Society. In his presentation, the architectural historian will highlight Great Bend's extensive heritage of beautiful, Modern-style buildings from the late 1940s through the mid-1970s. These structures represent the full range of building types, from residential to institutional, commercial, industrial, recreational and sacred. Many were designed by local architects, who could pursue careers and exercise their talents in Barton County. As a cohesive and well preserved ensemble they constitute a cultural resource of special value. The characteristics of these forward-looking developments influenced many smaller towns throughout Kansas and indeed across America during and following the Eisenhower years.

Barton Co. Commission agrees to vacate phantom roads

Everybody needs some vacation. Or at least a little field trip. Last Wednesday, the Barton County Commission got both on a brief excursion to some fields north of Heizer. The purpose was to view county roads, or the lack thereof, to determine if the roads could be vacated. The commission voted at this Wednesday's meeting to approve that vacation.
