Derecho storm leaves behind damage in Petersburg area

It began as a rolling dust storm with zero visibility and dark as night. It progressed to high winds. Dirt was blown into otherwise tight buildings. Last Thursday, Petersburg, along with many other area towns, was in a line of strong winds rapidly moving across the area. This was referred to as a Derecho which is a straight-line wind storm which can have winds from 35 miles an hour to 100 miles an hour. (Highest ever recorded reached 130 miles an hour). To be designated as a Derecho, the line must be at least 200 miles long with winds over 50 miles an hour. This one was estimated at 400 miles long. Winds at Petersburg registered 99 miles an hour.

Special dedication set for St. Mary’s Cemetery, Primrose

A special recognition and dedication ceremony is planned at St. Mary’s Cemetery, north of Primrose, on Saturday, May 28, at 1 p.m. to acknowledge recent improvements and those who have volunteered their service over the years. The cemetery was established over 90 years ago when Martin and Elizabeth Miller deeded the property known today as St. Mary’s Cemetery on April 20, 1929 for $1 for St. Mary’s Church, Primrose.

Many have power back in Northeast Nebraska

Norfolk and the surrounding area should have power back after high winds on Wednesday caused severe damage in northeast, north central and central Nebraska. The Elkhorn Rural Public Power District's corporate communicator Jennifer Adams said those in the Elgin area should have power back. There are still some customers out north and west of Clearwater and crews are being sent from Battle Creek to assist.

One arrested after trying to stab a man

NORFOLK - A Petersburg man was arrested in Norfolk after trying to stab someone at a residence in the 300 block of North 8th Street early Thursday morning. According to Captain Mike Bauer, police were called to a house after the caller said there was a bloody man at his back door that he didn’t recognize.

Village board discusses dog ordinance

At their meeting Tuesday, May 3, the Petersburg Village Board discussed the local dog ordinance. Board member Steve Werner saw an issue when dogs are picked up for running loose in Petersburg and taken to the holding kennel in St. Edward. It seems when the Petersburg resident pays the fee and brings the dog home, but the dog doesn’t have the proper shots or license.

Donald J. Friese, 88, of Petersburg, passed away Friday, May 6, 2022, at Arbor Care Center, Fullerton, NE.
