Medicare Open Plan D Enrollment Starting Soon; Crossroads Offering Counseling

Seniors looking to save money on their Part D prescription plans can do so with assistance. Michael Fillipini is a Senior Health Insurance Information Program counselor with Crossroads of Pella, and says during the open enrollment period for Medicare that runs October 15th through December 7th, they will provide help to match prescription drugs with plans that would maximize savings.

Pella Regional Therapy Services Held Open House at Westpoort Medical Plaza

Therapy Services from Pella Regional Health Center are available at a second Pella location. An open house was held in the Westpoort Medical Plaza at 2525 Washington Street on Tuesday. Director of Rehabilitation Services for Pella Regional Health Center Andrew Chenoweth says services provided include physical, occupational and speech therapy for adult and pediatric populations Athletic training services for recovery and prevention of sports injury are also available. Chenoweth says staff will work with patients to discuss which location can best meet their needs and is most cost-effective.

Race to End AHC Returns October 2nd

A Pella family is once again rallying community support for a rare neurological disease impacting their own daughter and others across the country. Stephen Henderson says the Race to End AHC returns to Pella Christian High School on Sunday, October 2nd. His daughter Estella is a preschool student at Madison Elementary, and according to Henderson, suffers from random episodes of paralysis in different parts of her body and sharp pain that can last for minutes, hours, or days, with no effective treatment available.

Pella Regional Health Center Pharmacies located in Pella and Prairie City will also offer walk in and scheduled flu vaccinations. The single best way to protect against the seasonal flu is to get vaccinated each year.

AHF to Offer I-Smile Program

American Home Findings (AHF) will be taking over several services that previously were provided by Marion County Public Health. AHF is located in Ottumwa. Katy Gottschalk, of AHF, said the first day in Knoxville is slated to be Wednesday, Oct. 5 and at a location yet to be determined. They hope to be located at the Raceway Mall on Lincoln.

Dr. Gentle Mental Health Speaker September 15

The Grinnell-Newburg Community School District and the Grinnell Area Mental Health Consortium have partnered to bring a community-wide speaking event series to Grinnell. The second event addresses the topic of the effects of media on children. On September 15, Dr. Douglas Gentile research scientist, author, and professor of Psychology at Iowa State University will be presenting: “Maximizing the benefits of media while minimizing the harms.” Dr. Gentile has authored over 140 peer-reviewed scientific journal articles, including studies on the positive and negative effects of mass media on children in several countries, video game addiction, and mindfulness practices for reducing anxiety and increasing happiness. Dr. Gentile runs the Media Research Lab at Iowa State University where he conducts research on media’s impact on children and adults. As the leader of this effort, Dr. Gentile develops and conducts research projects designed to give parents and other caregivers the kind of information they need and want to make informed media choices for their children.
