The Oskaloosa McDonalds on A Avenue West has been demolished, as crews now work to remove the debris. A new McDonalds restaurant will be constructed in its place, according to site plans that were submitted and approved by the Oskaloosa City Council in February.

PACE Recognizes George’s for Pivot to Online Ordering, Delivery

George’s Pizza and Steakhouse in Pella was one of four organizations and businesses recognized for helping others through the COVID-19 pandemic. Pella Area Community and Economic Alliance Executive Director Karen Eischen says the restaurant was honored because of how it pivoted to online ordering and delivery at a time where the food industry was significantly hampered by a lack of in-person guests. George’s Pizza was honored with Families First of Pella, Hearthstone, and Triumph Martial Arts with a Standing Ovation award from the PACE Alliance.

Pella Farmer’s Market Moves to Central Park Thursday

The Pella Farmer’s Market is changing their location this week. The market previously operated in the parking lot of First Reformed Church, but organizers are aiming to relocate to the east side of Central Park in an effort to make vendors more visible and accessible for the community. The Pella Farmer’s Market will begin operating in this new location from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. this Thursday and continue these hours of operation every Thursday through October 28th.

Grab and Go Meals Available at Jefferson School

Grab and go meals remain available this summer to all students in the area 18 and under from the Pella Community School District. These meals are free of charge and consist of five breakfasts and five lunches per student. They will be distributed at Jefferson Intermediate (801 E. 13th Street) through the north driveway. Pick up will be on Wednesdays from 11am to 1pm and continue until school resumes in August. Families are asked to sign up each week to participate in the program before Tuesday at 10am, so food will be guaranteed availability. A reminder will be sent out weekly for the upcoming signup.

PACE Alliance Brings Back Fridays After Five

The Pella Area Community and Economic Alliance is inviting all to enjoy the Molengracht this summer with the return of Fridays After Five. Mary Mansfield with the PACE Alliance says food, drinks, and entertainment outdoors will be featured with the first event on Friday, June 4th. In addition to festivities, a special ceremony will be held to announce details about the new Spirit of Pella non-profit organization and goals for projects to enhance the downtown area. The event begins at 4:45 p.m. next Friday and is open to the public.

Oskaloosa Main Street has received a grant from the Mahaska County Community Foundation for a new towable stainless steel gas grill. The grill will be used to prepare corn on the cob for Oskaloosa’s annual Sweet Corn Serenade. This year’s Sweet Corn Serenade will be held July 29 from noon until 9pm on the square in downtown Oskaloosa.

Pagliai’s teams up with students to bring international flavor to local pizza

Grinnell’s pizzeria Pagliai’s is teaming up with the Grinnell College’s Cultural Attaché Program to serve up some international flavors from Thailand, Brazil and India. In an event called Tastes of the World, Grinnellians had the chance to try some specialty pizza inspired by the tastes of Divyansh Singh `23, Carolina Novaes `23 or Sun Yuvachitti `24. Each student helped model a unique pizza after the cuisine from their home country through the partnership of the Cultural Attaché Program and Pagliai’s.

This May, Cultural Attachés of Grinnell College are partnering with Pagliai's Pizza for a "Tastes of the World" event. Through the Cultural Attaché Program, Grinnell College students have worked with Pagliai's to create three pizzas that represent a little piece of the culture they call home -- from India, Brazil, and Thailand. By purchasing one or more of the special pizzas, individuals will have the opportunity to taste new flavors and learn a little bit more about the significance of those flavors.

Coffee Time with Tulips Returns Next Week

A program made popular during last year’s closures due to COVID-19 is returning to educate the public about Pella’s favorite flower. Pella Community Services Director Jeanette Vaughan says Coffee Time with Tulips is back for 2021, with livestreams planned on April 7, 14, 21, 28 and May 5 at 9:00am via Facebook Live. The program is hosted by Pella Parks Manager Chandler Nunnikhoven, who will cover a different topic from designing the tulip displays through planting. Weather permitting, the live events will be held outside at one of the City’s parks and feature special guests including the Tulip Queen and Royal Court. The City of Pella Parks Department also intends to release a bloom status map in the coming weeks as well.
